DaVinci Roofscapes Lawsuit: Bellaforte Defects, Warranty, and Claims

Homeowners searching for a DaVinci Roofscapes lawsuit will find two individual cases on the record — one in Arkansas and one in Oklahoma — both closed, and no publicly reported class action over the company’s discontinued Bellaforte synthetic slate shingles. Most affected homeowners are working through DaVinci’s written warranty rather than the courts, and some have hired attorneys after their claims were denied or stalled.

What’s Wrong With Bellaforte Shingles

Bellaforte was DaVinci’s snap-fit composite shingle designed to mimic natural slate. The recurring failure is cracking at the lower tabs where the two-piece shingle joins, and roofing professionals attribute it to pressure from nailing on the right side of the tile.¹²

Emerald Roofing, a contractor that has inspected numerous Bellaforte installations, said 70 percent of the Bellaforte roofs it examined needed full replacement due to tab fractures or cracking, with failures especially common on roofs installed around 2012.³⁴ The cracks often can’t be seen from the ground, so damage may only be apparent after a close-up inspection.

DaVinci discontinued Bellaforte in May 2023, citing the cracking issues.³ It replaced the line with Province Slate.

The Lawsuits on the Record

Johnson v. DaVinci Roofscapes (Arkansas, 2021)

Harold Johnson sued DaVinci Roofscapes, LLC and Nationwide General Insurance Company in January 2021. The case was filed in the Circuit Court of Washington County and removed by DaVinci to the Western District of Arkansas. Court records describe it as a contract dispute, with exhibits referencing a homeowner’s insurance policy and a roofing estimate.⁵

DaVinci moved to dismiss on jurisdictional grounds and was dismissed with prejudice on August 30, 2021. Judge Timothy L. Brooks signed a final order dismissing the remainder of the case with prejudice on May 6, 2022.⁵

Moghadam v. DaVinci Roofscapes (Oklahoma, 2018)

Sassan K. Moghadam filed a product liability suit against DaVinci Roofscapes LLC and Crossroads Roofing Supply Inc. in Cleveland County District Court on September 4, 2018, alleging personal injury from a defective product and seeking damages in excess of $10,000. Court records don’t specify which DaVinci product line was involved or the nature of the injury.⁶

The case closed on August 11, 2020, when both defendants were dismissed with prejudice after reaching a settlement. Terms were not disclosed in public filings.⁶

No class action against DaVinci over Bellaforte has been publicly reported.

What the DaVinci Warranty Actually Covers

To file a claim, DaVinci requires written notice within 30 days of discovering damage, along with proof of purchase, proof of ownership, and photo documentation. The company may also require samples of defective material for laboratory analysis.⁷

The coverage cliff is at year 10. For the first 10 years, DaVinci covers replacement product plus installation labor up to $350 per square (100 square feet) for removal and reinstallation. After 10 years, replacement material reimbursement is prorated over the remaining warranty period, and labor is no longer covered at all.⁷ Because many of the worst-affected Bellaforte roofs were installed around 2012, a large share of homeowners noticing failures now are already past that window.⁴

Any dispute over warranty coverage must be brought in the District Court for Johnson County, Kansas, under Kansas law, within one year of the claim accruing.⁷ That forum-selection clause matters if you’re considering suit.

How Claims Have Been Going for Homeowners

Consumer reviews describe a difficult claims process. Multiple homeowners have said DaVinci characterized their cracked tiles as “cosmetic” damage not covered by the warranty. One homeowner said they filed a claim in July 2024 and waited months without resolution, then hired an attorney. Another said they were told widespread cracking on a five-year-old roof was “fine” and didn’t qualify. On one consumer review site, 27 percent of reviewed customers said they would recommend DaVinci, and 11 of 18 reviews rated the company “Very Unsatisfied.”¹

There’s a separate wrinkle if DaVinci offers to replace your Bellaforte roof with its newer Province Slate product. At least one reviewer reported that homeowners who accept the swap become ineligible to file future warranty claims.¹ Read the specific terms before signing off.

Carriers are increasingly imposing time limits: policies may shift to actual cash value or drop roof coverage entirely once a roof is over 10 years old, and some carriers stop insuring roofs at 17 years.⁸ For a Bellaforte roof installed around 2012, both the manufacturer warranty and the insurance policy may already be significantly diminished by the time the cracking becomes obvious.
