Who Can Apply

Both applicants must be at least 18 to marry without extra steps. A 16- or 17-year-old can apply, but only after a parent or legal guardian appears before the clerk and signs a written consent, and the minor and consenting adult petition a juvenile court judge or court commissioner for written authorization. There is a mandatory 72-hour waiting period between filing the petition and receiving that approval, and the judge cannot authorize the marriage if the age gap between the parties is more than four years. No one under 16 can marry in Utah.2Utah Legislature. Utah Code 81-2-304 – Marriage by Minors, Consent of Parent or Guardian, Juvenile Court Authorization

Utah also voids marriages between close relatives, including parents and children, siblings, aunts or uncles with nieces or nephews, and first cousins. First cousins have a narrow exception if both are 65 or older, or both are 55 or older with a district court finding that either party cannot reproduce.3Utah Legislature. How Long the License Is Good For

The license expires 32 days after it is issued. If the ceremony does not happen inside that window, the license becomes void and you have to reapply and pay again. It can only be used within Utah, so a wedding held outside the state requires a license from that jurisdiction instead.7Utah Legislature.
