DC Talk Scandal: Tait’s Confession, Investigation, and Lawsuit

The DC Talk scandal centers on Michael Tait, the longtime DC Talk member who later fronted the Newsboys for 15 years, and a wave of sexual assault, grooming, and drugging allegations made public in 2025 by at least nine men and one woman, with incidents reported between 1998 and 2023. Tait has publicly admitted the accusations are “largely true.” A police investigation in Tennessee has effectively stalled, no accuser has sued Tait personally, and the Newsboys’ co-founder has filed a sprawling federal lawsuit against the journalists who broke parts of the story, a rival Christian band, a major charity, and a group of concert promoters.

Who Michael Tait Is

Tait co-founded DC Talk in the late 1980s with Toby McKeehan (TobyMac) and Kevin Max, and the group became one of the most commercially successful acts in Christian music. DC Talk went on hiatus in 2001 and never formally reunited.1The Roys Report. What Tait Is Accused Of

On June 4, 2025, the independent Christian journalism outlet The Roys Report published a two-and-a-half-year investigation drawing on more than 50 sources, alleging a pattern of predatory grooming, sexual assault, and substance abuse by Tait dating back to 2004.1The Roys Report. The accounts share a consistent shape. Tait is alleged to have used his standing in the Christian music world to befriend younger, often aspiring musicians, invited them to his Nashville home or spent time with them on tour, supplied alcohol or drugs, and then assaulted them while they were incapacitated or asleep.

The First Three Accusers

The Roys Report’s June 2025 investigation featured three men, each 22 at the time of his alleged encounter, speaking under pseudonyms. “Phillip” alleged that in 2004 Tait invited him to his Nashville home, went skinny dipping, and later touched his anal area without consent. “Steven,” a touring musician, alleged that in January 2011 Tait gave him heavy amounts of alcohol and later woke him by kissing him and fondling his genitals.5Religion News Service. Jason Jones, Randall Crawford, and Shawn Davis

Jason Jones, the founding manager of Evanescence, alleged that in late 1998 he was drugged and assaulted at Tait’s home, waking three times to find Tait performing oral sex on him and resisting each time until Tait stopped.3The Guardian. Shawn Davis says the abuse began when he was a minor. He met Tait in 2003 at a Nashville party at age 16, and alleges Tait took him to bars, supplied alcohol, and introduced him to marijuana, cigarettes, and prescription pills.8The Guardian. The 2014 Fargo Incident

One allegation sits apart from the pattern involving men. A woman identified as “Nicole” says that during the Newsboys’ Christmas tour in Fargo, North Dakota, in December 2014, Tait offered her a shot of tequila at a hotel bar, after which she blacked out. She says she regained consciousness to find Newsboys lighting technician Matthew Brewer sexually assaulting her in a hotel room while Tait watched.10The Roys Report. Michael Tait Accused of Watching Rape During Newsboys Tour She filed a police report with Fargo police on December 19, 2014, and underwent a rape kit examination, but the investigation was shelved without the accused being interviewed. Brewer, through an attorney, has denied the allegations and called the encounter consensual. Tour manager Steve Campbell denied covering up the incident, though witnesses alleged he discouraged staff from reporting it. This incident is now central to the Newsboys co-founder’s federal lawsuit.

Tait’s Confession

Tait announced his departure from the Newsboys on January 16, 2025, in an Instagram letter that gave no explanation beyond the announcement itself.12Gospel Music Association. Six days after The Roys Report published its investigation, Tait posted a statement titled “My Confession.” He wrote: “Recent reports of my reckless and destructive behavior, including drug and alcohol abuse and sexual activity are sadly, largely true.” He admitted that for roughly two decades he had used cocaine, consumed excessive alcohol, and “at times, touched men in an unwanted sensual way.”13Billboard. Where the Criminal Investigation Stands

In August 2025, Shawn Davis told People magazine he was working with the Brentwood Police Department in Tennessee to build a criminal case. Brentwood police confirmed a “preliminary investigation” but said at the time they had “no active cases.”15WSMV. By April 2026, the investigation had effectively stalled. Captain Steven Pepin said the department had taken statements from seven people and concluded, “At this point, we do not believe there is a viable prosecutable case within our jurisdiction.” Most reported incidents either occurred outside Brentwood or fell outside Tennessee’s statute of limitations.4The Roys Report. Fallout for the Newsboys and Christian Music

The Newsboys said their “hearts were shattered” and that while they had “heard rumors over the years,” they could not verify them and Tait had “emphatically” denied them when confronted. The Newsboys Federal Lawsuit

On April 17, 2026, Newsboys, Inc. and co-founder Wes Campbell filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee (Case No. 3:26-cv-00484) against 33 defendants, including The Roys Report and journalists Julie Roys and Jessica Morris, the Christian band MercyMe, the charity World Vision, and several concert promotion companies owned by Dutch private equity firm Waterland.22Variety. The complaint alleges defamation and antitrust violations. Its central claim is that The Roys Report’s article on the 2014 Fargo incident was a manufactured narrative the suit calls “The Fargo Fabrication.” Campbell alleges the hotel encounter was consensual and that the rape allegation was created as part of a coordinated scheme to destroy his company, Thriving Children Advocates, and sabotage a $50 million acquisition deal with Waterland.23Religion News Service.
