Dee Dee Blanchard was a Louisiana-born mother who spent more than two decades fabricating serious illnesses in her only child, Gypsy Rose, and was stabbed to death in her Springfield, Missouri home on June 9, 2015, in a killing her daughter arranged with an online boyfriend as the only escape she saw from the abuse. She met Rod Blanchard while he was still in high school. They married when she was 24 and he was 17, and separated shortly after Gypsy Rose was born on July 27, 1991. Members of Dee Dee’s own family later described troubling behavior long before Gypsy became the focus. Her stepmother, Laura Pitre, said Dee Dee neglected her mother Emma Pitre at the end of Emma’s life, leaving her dirty and unfed. Dee Dee’s stepsister Kristy Blanchard said Dee Dee was “starving” their mother and questioned whether Dee Dee played a role in Emma’s death in 1997. The Medical Abuse of Gypsy Rose
Dee Dee began inventing medical problems for Gypsy almost from birth, starting with a claim of sleep apnea and escalating from there. By the time Gypsy was eight, Dee Dee had told doctors her daughter had leukemia, muscular dystrophy, seizures, asthma, hearing and visual impairments, and a chromosomal disorder. To hold the story together, Dee Dee put her daughter through unnecessary procedures, including eye surgeries and the removal of Gypsy’s salivary glands, which she justified by using topical anesthetics to induce drooling.5NPR. Control extended past the exam room. Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 gave her a clean slate. She claimed Gypsy’s medical records had all been destroyed in the storm and moved the two of them first to Aurora, Missouri, and then to Springfield, where they took possession of a home built by Habitat for Humanity in 2008.7People. Dee Dee also isolated Gypsy from anyone who might notice. Gypsy was kept out of school and away from peers. Warnings That Went Nowhere
The abuse was not invisible to the medical system. In 2007, pediatric neurologist Dr. Bernardo Flasterstein examined Gypsy at age 14, found no support for the conditions Dee Dee described, and wrote in Gypsy’s file that “the mother is not a good historian.” He suspected Munchausen syndrome by proxy and sent a letter flagging the concern to Gypsy’s primary care physician, but said he did not have enough at the time to contact Child Protective Services.1BuzzFeed News. In 2009, another doctor who could find no symptoms supporting Dee Dee’s claims did contact authorities. Two caseworkers visited the Blanchard home, found “nothing out of the ordinary,” and closed the case.9ABC News. How Dee Dee Blanchard Died
Gypsy met Nicholas Godejohn on a Christian dating website, and their relationship developed largely online and out of Dee Dee’s sight. By 2015, Gypsy had asked Godejohn to kill her mother.
On June 9, 2015, Godejohn traveled from Wisconsin to the Blanchard home in Springfield. Gypsy provided a knife, gloves, and duct tape. Once Gypsy signaled that Dee Dee was asleep, Godejohn went into her bedroom and stabbed her 17 times while Gypsy hid in the bathroom.6NewsNation. On June 14, Gypsy posted on the shared “Dee Gyp Blancharde” Facebook page: “That Bitch is dead!”7People. The next day, investigators traced the Facebook posts to Big Bend, Wisconsin. What Happened to the People Involved
On June 16, 2015, Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson charged both Gypsy and Godejohn with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.10Greene County Sheriff’s Office. In July 2016, Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to ten years, the minimum for a Class A felony under Missouri law.11Ozarks First. Godejohn turned down a plea deal and went to trial in Greene County in November 2018. His attorneys argued diminished capacity based on Autism Spectrum Disorder. Gypsy testified that the killing was the only way out she could see. The jury convicted Godejohn of first-degree murder and armed criminal action, and he was sentenced to life without parole plus 25 years.15A&E. Dee Dee Was Never Charged With Anything
Although the family lived for years on Social Security, disability payments, food stamps, and charitable donations tied to Gypsy’s fabricated illnesses, Dee Dee was never criminally charged with medical fraud, Medicaid fraud, or child abuse in her lifetime, and no formal benefits-fraud investigation was pursued before her death.9ABC News. Her case is often cited in discussions of factitious disorder imposed on another, the DSM-5 term for what is still commonly called Munchausen syndrome by proxy.
