Order more copies than you think you need. Each life insurance company, bank, pension administrator, and government agency handling the deceased’s affairs will want its own certified original. Eight to twelve copies is a common range for a single order.
What You’ll Need to Send
Every request requires a valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport. If your current address doesn’t match the address on your ID, include a recent utility bill or bank statement showing your name and address.
You’ll also need to prove your connection to the deceased. A spouse can submit a marriage certificate. A child or parent can include a birth certificate showing the relationship. Estate executors should include letters of administration or letters testamentary issued by the Register of Wills. An attorney acting as an authorized representative should provide a signed letter on firm letterhead identifying the client and the purpose of the request.

Fees and Processing Time

Why Requests Get Denied
Inaccurate information on the application is the most frequent reason for rejection. The office needs the deceased’s full legal name, exact date of death, and place of death to locate the record. A misspelled name or wrong date triggers a denial, and staff will not guess at what you meant.
Failing to prove eligibility is the other major stumbling block. If your documents don’t clearly establish your relationship to the deceased or your authority to act, the request won’t be approved. Cause-of-death changes work differently. Using the Certificate Outside the United States
A Delaware death certificate used abroad will almost always need additional authentication. For countries that are members of the 1961 Hague Convention, the required document is an apostille.
