Dennis Bowman: Murders, Genetic Genealogy, and Sentencing

Dennis Bowman is a western Michigan man convicted of two murders committed nearly a decade apart: the 1980 rape and stabbing of 25-year-old Kathleen Doyle in Norfolk, Virginia, and the 1989 killing of his 14-year-old adopted daughter, Aundria Bowman, in Fillmore Township, Michigan. He was arrested in 2019 after investigative genetic genealogy tied him to the Doyle cold case, then confessed to killing Aundria. He is serving two life sentences plus 35 to 50 years in the Virginia prison system.¹²

How Genetic Genealogy Caught Him

Kathleen Doyle’s murder went unsolved for nearly four decades. A false confession in the early 1980s sent investigators down a dead end. In 2018, Norfolk cold case detective Jonathan Smith submitted a DNA profile pulled from a bedsheet at the scene to a genealogy company, which returned a list of 32 potential suspects. Bowman’s name was at the bottom.³

Michigan State Police already knew him. Court transcripts confirmed Bowman had been in Norfolk in September 1980 for a two-week Navy training drill. A direct DNA comparison against the rape kit and bedspread produced a match, and Bowman was arrested in Allegan County, Michigan, on November 22, 2019.⁴⁵

The Murder of Kathleen Doyle

Kathleen O’Brien Doyle was sexually assaulted and stabbed to death in her Ocean View home on Granby Street while her husband was away on Navy deployment. She was killed between the evening of September 9 and midnight, and her body was not found until around noon on September 11, 1980.³

In June 2020, Bowman pleaded guilty in Norfolk to first-degree murder, rape, and burglary. He received two life sentences for the murder and rape convictions and an additional 20 years for burglary.¹

The Murder of Aundria Bowman

Aundria Bowman was born Alexis Badger in 1974 and placed for adoption in Virginia by her teenage biological mother, Cathy Terkanian. She was adopted by Dennis and Brenda Bowman and raised in western Michigan.⁶

Before she disappeared, Aundria told her mother that Dennis had molested her, and she reported the abuse to school officials as well. Brenda Bowman later testified she had dismissed the accusation and told Aundria it was a lie.⁷⁸

On March 11, 1989, 14-year-old Aundria vanished from the family home in Fillmore Township. Dennis Bowman told his wife the girl had run away and stolen money from a dresser. Authorities classified the case as a runaway, and for more than 30 years there was not enough evidence to tie him to her disappearance.⁹¹⁰

After his arrest in the Doyle case, Bowman confessed. He told police he had confronted Aundria after she threatened to report his sexual abuse, slapped her during the argument, and that she fell down the stairs and broke her neck. He admitted hiding the body in a barn, then dismembering it with an axe and a machete, placing the remains in a barrel, and burying them at a former residence before eventually reburying them in the backyard of his Hamilton, Michigan, home.¹¹¹²

Brenda Bowman testified that in February 2020 Dennis told her Aundria was buried under a cement slab in their backyard, and she passed that information to sheriff’s deputies. On February 5, 2020, investigators recovered skeletal remains from a shallow grave beneath concrete on property Bowman owned in Monterey Township, Allegan County. The medical examiner confirmed the body had been dismembered and placed in separate trash bags. Because more than 30 years had passed, a precise cause of death could not be determined.⁹¹³

Bowman was originally charged in Allegan County with open murder, felony murder, first-degree child abuse, and mutilation of a body. On December 22, 2021, he pleaded no contest to second-degree murder. On February 7, 2022, Judge Margaret Zuzich Bakker sentenced him to 35 to 50 years in prison, calling him “a serious, dangerous man that has harmed many communities, many families.”²¹²

Earlier and Other Suspected Crimes

Bowman’s documented pattern of violence goes back to at least 1979. That year he sexually assaulted a 27-year-old woman in Holland, Michigan, binding and gagging her in her home near James Street and Butternut Drive. He lived on the same street. He did not confess to the assault until decades later, in custody for the Doyle killing, and no formal charges were filed.¹⁴

On May 23, 1980, months before the Doyle murder, Bowman attacked a young woman on a bicycle along Lakeshore Drive in Ottawa County. He tried to force her off the road, drew a handgun, and ordered her into nearby woods, saying he intended to rape her. When she refused, he fired a shot near her foot. She escaped by flagging down a passing pickup truck. Charged initially with assault with intent to murder, he pleaded guilty to assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct and was sentenced to five to ten years. He was released in 1986.¹⁵¹⁶

Ottawa County detectives have named Bowman as the primary suspect in the September 1989 abduction and attempted rape of a six-year-old girl taken from near her elementary school in Holland to woods near the Silver Creek County Campground in Hamilton. The child was tied up and gagged before getting free. A composite sketch drawn with her help reportedly resembles Bowman, who was working in Holland at the time. Initial DNA testing on a rope from the scene returned negative results, and investigators have sought to retest the evidence. Bowman has not been charged in that case. He has also admitted to sexually assaulting other women in California and at a trailer park, though the details and any legal outcomes of those admissions are not fully documented in public records.¹⁷¹¹

Where He Is Now

After his Michigan sentencing on February 7, 2022, Bowman was transferred to Virginia on February 17, 2022, and processed at Nottoway Correctional Center in Burkeville. He is serving his Virginia life sentences concurrently with the Michigan 35-to-50-year term; earlier reporting placed him at Sussex I State Prison. Brenda Bowman was never charged in either murder.¹⁸³⁷

The Netflix Documentary

The case is the subject of Into the Fire: The Lost Daughter, a two-part Netflix documentary released in September 2024. Directed by Ryan White and produced with Jessica Hargrave, Matt Maher, and Charlize Theron, the film follows Cathy Terkanian’s decade-long push to find out what happened to Aundria. It was inspired by reporting on the case by Nile Cappello for The Atavist.¹⁹

The documentary includes interviews with Metta McLeod, the woman abducted as a child in 1989 who identifies Bowman as her attacker, along with former neighbors and witnesses. It also draws on FOIA records to trace his criminal history and examines the systemic failures that let Aundria’s disappearance go uninvestigated for so long.¹¹
