Did Ryan Coogler File a Lawsuit Against Bank of America?

Ryan Coogler did not file a lawsuit against Bank of America after he was handcuffed at an Atlanta branch in January 2022 when a teller mistook his cash withdrawal for a robbery. In a statement to The New York Times, Coogler said, “This situation should never have happened. However, Bank of America worked with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on.”1Variety. What Happened at the Bank

On January 7, 2022, Coogler walked into a Bank of America branch on West Paces Ferry Road in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood wearing a hat, sunglasses, and a COVID-19 face mask.3Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The note read: “I would like to withdraw $12,000 cash from my checking account. Please do the money count somewhere else. I’d like to be discreet.”4Variety. Because the amount exceeded $10,000, the withdrawal triggered an automatic alert on his account. The teller, reading that alert alongside the note’s request for discretion, concluded a robbery was underway. She told her manager, and the two called 911.6ABC7 News. How Bank of America Responded

Bank of America issued a public apology through Bill Halldin, senior vice president of media relations: “We deeply regret that this incident occurred. It never should have happened and we have apologized to Mr. Coogler.”9Fortune. The incident did not become public until March 2022, when the Atlanta Police Department released its body camera footage. The video showed officers with weapons drawn at the counter, Coogler being handcuffed, and a separate clip in which the teller told officers her “stomach started turning” when Coogler presented the note.11KLTV. Why No Lawsuit Was Filed

By the time the footage became public, Coogler and the bank had already resolved the matter privately. His own statement is the clearest explanation on the record: the situation should not have happened, the bank addressed it to his satisfaction, and he had moved on.1Variety. One point worth separating out: Coogler has been named as a defendant in unrelated litigation, including a 2016 copyright suit filed in New Jersey over the film Creed.12NJ.com.
