If you live in Colorado and can’t work because of a physical or mental condition, three programs can pay you monthly benefits: federal Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Colorado’s own Aid to the Needy Disabled (AND). SSDI averages about $1,634 per month and depends on your work history; SSI pays up to $994 per month in 2026 and depends on your income and assets; AND pays up to $994 per month as a state bridge while a federal claim is pending.1Social Security Administration. Which Program Fits Your Situation
SSDI is the program for people with a solid work history. You paid into it through payroll taxes, and your benefit is calculated from your lifetime earnings rather than your current bank balance.5Social Security Administration. Disability Insurance Trust Fund It comes with Medicare, though not right away.
SSI is the program for people who haven’t worked enough (or recently enough) to qualify for SSDI and who have very little income or savings. No work history is required.6Social Security Administration. Who Can Get SSI The maximum federal payment in 2026 is $994 for an individual and $1,491 for a couple, and Colorado adds a small state supplement on top.2Social Security Administration. AND is the state-run program created under C.R.S. § 26-2-111 for Coloradans whose disability is expected to last at least six months and who have insufficient income and resources.8Justia. Colorado Code 26-2-111 – Eligibility for Public Assistance – Rules It’s most useful as interim help while you wait on SSI, and the county may require you to file the SSI application as a condition of AND.
Filing for SSDI and SSI at the same time is common when you might fit both, because SSI has no waiting period for payments to start and SSDI does.
Do You Meet the Medical Standard?
SSDI and SSI use the same definition: a physical or mental impairment that prevents you from doing any substantial work, expected to last at least 12 continuous months or result in death.9Social Security Administration. Disability Evaluation Under Social Security – Definition of Disability The word “any” matters. Social Security isn’t asking whether you can go back to your last job. It’s asking whether, given your age, education, and limitations, there’s any work you could do.
There’s also an earnings ceiling. If you’re currently earning more than $1,690 per month in 2026 ($2,830 if you’re blind), Social Security treats that as substantial gainful activity and will deny the claim regardless of your diagnosis.10Social Security Administration. Substantial Gainful Activity
Some severe conditions qualify for fast-track approval through the Compassionate Allowances program — several hundred diagnoses including ALS, aggressive cancers, and early-onset Alzheimer’s. You don’t apply separately; Social Security flags qualifying conditions automatically.11Social Security Administration. Compassionate Allowances Conditions
Do You Meet the Financial or Work-History Rules?
SSDI: Work Credits
SSDI requires enough work credits from past payroll taxes. In 2026 you earn one credit per $1,890 in earnings, up to four credits a year.12Social Security Administration. Quarter of Coverage Most adults need 40 credits total, with 20 earned in the 10 years before the disability began. Younger workers can qualify with fewer credits because they’ve had less career time.
SSI: Income and Assets
SSI caps your countable resources at $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple.6Social Security Administration. Who Can Get SSI The house you live in and one vehicle used for transportation don’t count.13Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income SSI Resources These limits have not moved in decades, so a modest savings account can push you over.
AND: Colorado’s Rules
For AND, you’ll need insufficient income and resources under state rules, plus a doctor’s statement that your disability is expected to last at least six months and prevents you from working any job.8Justia. Colorado Code 26-2-111 – Eligibility for Public Assistance – Rules
How to File in Colorado
For SSDI or SSI, you have three ways to start: the Social Security Administration’s website, the national phone line at 1-800-772-1213, or an in-person appointment at a Colorado field office (Denver, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and other cities).14Social Security Administration. Field Office Locator Online is fastest. In person lets you ask questions and confirm your paperwork is complete before it’s submitted.
Once your application is filed, the field office verifies the non-medical pieces — work credits for SSDI, income and assets for SSI — and then sends the case to Colorado’s Disability Determination Services (DDS) for the medical review. DDS collects your medical records, may schedule a free consultative exam if it needs more information, and issues the initial decision.15Social Security Administration. Disability Determination Process16Colorado Department of Human Services. Disability Determination Services Respond quickly if DDS asks for anything. Delays here are one of the most common reasons a claim stalls or gets denied for insufficient evidence.
For AND, apply through Colorado PEAK or at your local county department of human services. You’ll bring bank statements, income documentation, records of other benefits, and a medical verification form from your doctor.3Colorado Department of Human Services. Adult Financial Programs
Documentation That Actually Moves the Claim
A disability application is only as strong as its medical evidence. Pull together records from every doctor, therapist, psychiatrist, and specialist you’ve seen: diagnostic imaging, blood work, treatment notes, hospitalization records, and any letters from providers describing what you can and can’t do. A clear provider statement on your functional limits carries real weight.
Social Security’s Adult Disability Report (Form SSA-3368) asks for your last 15 years of work — job titles, duties, physical demands — and how your condition limits everyday activities like walking, standing, concentrating, and following instructions. Answer specifically. Vague responses (“sometimes I hurt”) slow the review and give an examiner less to work with than concrete detail (“I can stand for about 15 minutes before I need to sit down”).
The Money Reality After Approval
SSDI approval doesn’t mean immediate payment. Federal law imposes a five-month waiting period from the date Social Security determines your disability began, so the first check arrives in the sixth full month after that onset date.17Social Security Administration. Approval Process – Disability Benefits ALS is the only exception. SSI has no waiting period, which is another reason to file for both when you might qualify.
Because applications drag on for months, most approved claimants receive back pay covering the gap between their benefit start date and their approval. For SSDI, you can also get up to 12 months of retroactive benefits for time before you even filed, if you were disabled during that period.18Social Security Administration. Handbook 1513 – Retroactive Effect of Application Back pay often arrives as a lump sum in the thousands.
When You Get Denied
Roughly 80% of initial claims are denied, so treat a denial as an expected step, not the end. You have 60 days from each decision to file the next appeal.19Social Security Administration. Appeals Process – Understanding SSI There are four levels:
- Reconsideration. A different DDS examiner reviews the file from scratch and considers any new medical evidence. You can request it online, by mailing Form SSA-561, or by phone.20Social Security Administration. Request Reconsideration
- Hearing before an Administrative Law Judge. This is where most successful claims are actually won. The judge reviews your case independently, hears your testimony, and may question medical and vocational experts about what work, if any, you could do.21Social Security Administration. SSA’s Hearing Process
- Appeals Council review. The Council looks for legal errors or decisions unsupported by the evidence; it isn’t a second hearing.
- Federal court. As a last resort you can file a civil action in U.S. District Court.
If you’re going to bring in a representative, the hearing stage is the most common (and often most effective) place to do it.
Health Coverage Through Each Program
SSDI recipients qualify for Medicare after 24 months of benefits, counted from your entitlement date — so the five-month waiting period counts toward those 24 months.22Social Security Administration. Medicare Information That still leaves a long gap where many people have no coverage; COBRA, a marketplace plan, or Medicaid may fill it.
SSI is different. Colorado enrolls SSI recipients in Medicaid automatically, covering doctor visits, prescriptions, and hospital care at no cost.7Colorado Office of Employment First. Federal Disability Benefits
Whether to Hire a Representative
You can hire an attorney or accredited representative at any stage. Federal rules cap the fee at the lesser of 25% of your past-due benefits or $9,200, paid out of your back-pay award.23Social Security Administration. Fee Agreements Nothing is due upfront, and if you win no back pay, you owe nothing. A representative handles communication with Social Security, chases down medical evidence, prepares you for the ALJ hearing, and questions the vocational expert. Given that most successful reversals happen at that hearing, that’s usually where the value shows up.
