Do I Need an Appointment to Renew My License in KY?

You do not need an appointment to renew your license in KY. Every Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Driver Licensing Regional Office accepts walk-ins, though capacity is limited and wait times vary. If you want a set time and a shorter visit, book online at Drive.KY.gov, where new slots open weekly. Appointments cannot be scheduled by phone.¹

Booking an Appointment

Appointments are made only through Drive.KY.gov. New time slots are released weekly, so if nothing shows near you, check back in a few days.¹ There is no call-in option and no in-person scheduling desk.

Walking In Without an Appointment

Walk-ins are welcome at every regional office, but the office runs walk-ins at limited capacity around scheduled appointments.² Plan on an unpredictable wait, arrive early in the day, and bring everything you might need so a long wait doesn’t end in a second trip.

What to Bring So Your Visit Actually Works

If your name and address on the expiring license are still correct and you want a standard Kentucky credential, bring the license itself and be ready for the vision screening. No other paperwork is required.³

If you are upgrading to a REAL ID, or your name or address has changed, you need supporting documents: proof of identity (a certified U.S. birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or citizenship/naturalization certificate), proof of Social Security number, two proofs of Kentucky residency dated within the last year, and, if your name has changed, a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree granting the change, or legal name change order. Photocopies are not accepted, and your Social Security record must already reflect your current name.⁴ For a standard credential with a name or address change, you still need legal proof of the change and at least one proof of residency.⁵

Since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID (or another accepted ID such as a U.S. passport) is required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.⁶ If you never fly domestically or enter federal buildings, a standard license still works.

The Vision Screening

Starting January 1, 2025, every Kentucky driver must pass a vision screening to renew.⁷ You can take the free screening at any regional office during your visit (it averages under a minute), or have an optometrist, ophthalmologist, or KYTC-credentialed physician perform it and give you a signed Driver Vision Testing Certification Form to bring with you.⁸

Skipping the Office Entirely

If you qualify, online renewal at DLRenewal.KY.gov avoids the appointment question altogether. To use it, all of the following must be true: your license is not expired by more than one year, you are a U.S. citizen, you are at least 21 (or have turned 21 since your last license was issued), and you have completed the vision screening with either a one-time passcode from a regional office visit or a signed certification form from a vision specialist.⁹ Non-U.S. citizens and holders of under-21 vertical-format licenses who have not turned 21 cannot renew online.

Kentucky residents serving in the U.S. military who are stationed outside the state have a fourth option: mail renewal of a Class D operator’s license under KRS 186.416. It uses form TC 94-28, sent with required documents and payment to the Division of Driver Licensing in Frankfort or emailed to KYTC.MilitaryRen@ky.gov.¹⁰

Timing and What Happens If You Wait Too Long

For drivers 21 and older, a Kentucky license expires 31 days after your birthday, and you can renew up to six months before that expiration.³ Online renewal remains available for up to one year after expiration.⁹

Waiting longer costs you. A license expired less than five years can still be renewed without retaking any driving tests; expired more than five years and you must reapply as a new driver from the start.³ Driving on an expired license is a Class B misdemeanor.¹¹

After Your Renewal

If you renew in person, the office issues a 30-day temporary document you can use for driving and identification while your permanent card is produced.¹² The permanent license arrives by mail within 10 to 15 business days, the same window that applies to online renewals.¹³
