Do I Qualify for Food Stamps in Florida? Income, Assets, and Work Rules

You qualify for food stamps in Florida if you live in the state, your household’s gross monthly income is at or below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, your net income after allowed deductions is at or below 100 percent, and you meet the program’s citizenship and work rules. For fiscal year 2026, that gross limit works out to about $2,609 a month for one person and $5,359 for a family of four.1LIHEAP Clearinghouse. Federal Poverty Guidelines for FFY 2026 The program is run by the Florida Department of Children and Families under the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

Who Counts as Your Household

Before you check the income limits, figure out who is in your household, because that determines which numbers apply to you. For SNAP purposes, your household is everyone who lives with you and regularly buys and prepares food together, whether or not you are related.2Florida Department of Children and Families. SNAP Eligibility Live with a roommate but shop and cook separately? You can each apply as a one-person household.

Gross Income Limits

Florida uses a policy called Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility, which raises the gross income ceiling to 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Level for most households.3Food and Nutrition Service. Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE) That is more generous than the standard federal 130 percent limit used in some other states. Gross income means everything coming in before deductions: wages, Social Security, child support, and most other payments.

The approximate monthly gross income caps for fiscal year 2026 are:1LIHEAP Clearinghouse. Federal Poverty Guidelines for FFY 2026

  • 1 person: $2,609
  • 2 people: $3,525
  • 3 people: $4,442
  • 4 people: $5,359
  • 5 people: $6,275
  • 6 people: $7,192
  • 7 people: $8,109
  • 8 people: $9,025

Add about $757 per month for each additional member beyond eight. If your household includes someone age 60 or older, or someone with a disability, you do not have to meet the gross income test at all, though you still must meet the net income limit.3Food and Nutrition Service. Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility (BBCE)

Net Income Limits and the Deductions That Get You There

Passing the gross test is only half of it. Your net income, meaning what remains after allowed deductions, must fall at or below 100 percent of the Federal Poverty Level. The monthly net income limits for fiscal year 2026 are:4USDA Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Fiscal Year 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustments

  • 1 person: $1,305
  • 2 people: $1,763
  • 3 people: $2,221
  • 4 people: $2,680
  • 5 people: $3,138
  • 6 people: $3,596
  • 7 people: $4,055
  • 8 people: $4,513

The deductions that pull your gross number down to your net number can make the difference between qualifying and not:

  • A standard deduction applied automatically. For fiscal year 2026 in Florida, it is $209 for households of one to three, $223 for four, $261 for five, and $299 for six or more.4USDA Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Fiscal Year 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustments
  • An earned income deduction of 20 percent of all wages.5Food and Nutrition Service. Am I Eligible for SNAP?
  • A dependent care deduction for out-of-pocket child care or care for an incapacitated household member.
  • An excess shelter deduction when your housing costs (rent or mortgage, taxes, insurance, and utilities) exceed half of your adjusted income. It is capped at $744 per month for fiscal year 2026, and the cap does not apply if someone in the household is elderly or disabled.6USDA Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Fiscal Year 2026 Maximum Allotments and Deductions
  • A medical expense deduction for elderly or disabled household members. Allowable medical costs above $35 per month, including prescriptions, doctor visits, insurance premiums, and certain transportation, can be deducted.7Food and Nutrition Service. If you pay for heating or cooling, Florida may apply a Standard Utility Allowance to the shelter deduction instead of asking you to document every utility bill.8Food and Nutrition Service. Standard Utility Allowances

Do You Have to Pass an Asset Test?

For most Florida households, no. Because the state uses Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility, savings, vehicles, and property do not affect your eligibility.2Florida Department of Children and Families. SNAP Eligibility The asset limits only kick in for households that include someone disqualified from the program, for example due to an intentional program violation. When they do apply, the fiscal year 2026 caps are $3,000 for most households and $4,500 for households with an elderly or disabled member.4USDA Food and Nutrition Service. Residency and Citizenship

You have to be a Florida resident, and you have to prove your identity with something like a driver’s license or passport. Residency can be shown with a recent utility bill, mortgage statement, or signed lease.2Florida Department of Children and Families. SNAP Eligibility

U.S. citizens and certain lawfully present non-citizens can qualify. Non-citizens generally have to have lived in the country for at least five years, but children under 18 and people receiving disability-related assistance can qualify sooner.5Food and Nutrition Service. Am I Eligible for SNAP?

Work Requirements

Most adults between 16 and 59 who can work must register for work, take a suitable job if it is offered, and not quit a job voluntarily without good cause.9Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Work Requirements You are excused if you are already working at least 30 hours a week, caring for a child under six, enrolled at least half-time in school or training, or unable to work due to a physical or mental health condition.10The Florida Department of Children and Families. The Three-Month Limit for Adults Without Dependents

If you are 18 to 54, able to work, and have no dependents, you are what the program calls an able-bodied adult without dependents, or ABAWD. ABAWDs can receive SNAP for only three months in any three-year period unless they work or take part in a qualifying training program for at least 80 hours per month.9Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Work Requirements

You are exempt from the ABAWD time limit if you are pregnant, have a child under 18 in your home, cannot work due to a physical or mental limitation, are experiencing homelessness, are a veteran, or were in foster care on your 18th birthday.10The Florida Department of Children and Families. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

College Students

Students enrolled more than half-time in a college, university, or trade school are generally ineligible unless they meet an exemption. Common exemptions include working at least 20 hours a week for pay, participating in a federal or state work-study program, caring for a child under six, or receiving TANF. Students enrolled less than half-time are not subject to these extra restrictions. If you get most of your meals through a campus meal plan, you are ineligible regardless of enrollment status.11Food and Nutrition Service. Students

How Much You Would Get

The monthly benefit is not a flat amount. Florida subtracts 30 percent of your household’s net income from the federal maximum allotment for your household size, on the theory that you are expected to put about 30 percent of your own resources toward food.5Food and Nutrition Service.
