Citizenship and Immigration Status

What Legal Aid Covers

Legal aid handles civil matters only, focused on issues that threaten basic necessities like shelter, safety, and income.

Domestic violence cases often get priority. If you’re in immediate danger, many offices will expedite intake and may help even if your income slightly exceeds the guidelines.

What Legal Aid Does Not Cover

Criminal cases are outside legal aid’s scope. If you’re charged with a crime and can’t afford a lawyer, the court appoints a public defender through a separate system with its own eligibility process.

Fee-generating cases are also excluded. These are matters like personal injury claims or workers’ compensation, where a private attorney would take the case on contingency and charge nothing upfront. Complex business disputes and corporate matters fall outside legal aid too.

If You Don’t Qualify

Coming in just above the income threshold isn’t the end of the road.

  • Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ) provides free civil legal services, including a debt relief program, to New Jersey residents who can’t afford an attorney. Their eligibility rules may differ from LSNJ’s.
  • County bar association referral services connect you with attorneys in your area, sometimes at reduced-fee initial consultations.
