Motorcycles do pay tolls in California, but not everywhere. On toll roads and toll bridges, a motorcycle is billed as a standard two-axle vehicle at the same rate as a car. On most express lanes, motorcycles travel free, though some of those lanes still require you to carry a transponder set correctly. Which category you’re riding through decides everything.
Toll Roads and Bridges Charge the Full Two-Axle Rate
There is no motorcycle discount on California’s dedicated toll roads or toll bridges. The Orange County Toll Roads (State Routes 73, 133, 241, and 261) charge motorcycles the same rates as any other two-axle vehicle, varying by time of day and whether you have a FasTrak account.1The Toll Roads. Bridges work the same way. Express Lanes Are Usually Free for Motorcycles
California law lets solo motorcyclists use high-occupancy vehicle lanes without meeting the passenger requirement.5California Legislative Information. California Code VEH 21655.5 – High-Occupancy Vehicle Lanes That privilege carries over to most high-occupancy toll lanes, commonly called express lanes, where motorcycles ride toll-free.6California Highway Patrol. Bay Area
On the SR 237, I-80, I-880, US 101, and US 101/SR 85 Express Lanes, motorcycles ride free but must carry a FasTrak Flex transponder set to the “3+” position.7FasTrak. Carpooling Without the transponder in the right position, the system reads you as a solo driver in a car and charges the full toll.
Los Angeles and Orange County
The 405 Express Lanes let motorcycles travel free at all times, but a transponder is required to enter.8405 Express Lanes. Riders with personalized or specialty plates should verify their status, since the plate-reading system may not always read non-standard formats.
San Diego
The I-15 Express Lanes are free for motorcycles and no FasTrak account is needed. Remember that SR 125 is a toll road, not an express lane, so it charges everyone.4SANDAG. SANDAG FasTrak Information
How to Pay When You Do Owe a Toll
California’s toll system is entirely electronic. No cash booths anywhere. Sort out payment before you ride, not after.
FasTrak Account
A FasTrak account is the cheapest option. You load a prepaid balance (starting at $25 per toll tag), and tolls are deducted automatically. FasTrak users pay a lower rate than license plate or invoice payers at most facilities, and the $5 refundable security deposit per tag is waived for up to three tags if you enroll in automatic replenishment.9FasTrak. Get FasTrak If you plan to use express lanes, get the FasTrak Flex version. Its three-position switch is what tells the system your motorcycle qualifies for free travel.
One-Time Payment
Without a FasTrak account, you can pay online within five days before or five days after using a toll road.10The Toll Roads. Ways to Pay Tolls Miss that window and you’ll get a toll invoice at a higher rate, or a violation notice with penalties on top. Riders passing through on a trip often forget this step.
License Plate Account
A license plate account photographs your plate and bills you without a physical transponder. The rate runs slightly higher than FasTrak.
Mounting a Transponder on a Motorcycle

Some agencies also offer a motorcycle-specific sticker transponder that mounts on the headlamp. Place it at least two inches from any metal surface, and place it once: the adhesive is single-use and removing the sticker breaks the internal antenna.12The Toll Roads. How to Install – Motorcycle Either way, register your license plate to your FasTrak account so the system can match your vehicle if the transponder ever fails to read.
Veteran Toll Exemption
California exempts certain veterans from tolls on the Golden Gate Bridge and the seven state-owned Bay Area bridges. The vehicle must be registered to the veteran and display one of these plate types: Congressional Medal of Honor, Disabled Veteran, Legion of Valor, Pearl Harbor Survivor, Ex-Prisoner of War, or Purple Heart.13Bay Area FasTrak. What Happens If You Don’t Pay
Passing through without paying triggers a notice of toll evasion mailed to the registered owner. Penalties depend on the type of facility:
- On toll bridges, the initial penalty tops out at $25. Pay the toll within 15 days of that notice and you owe only the original toll with no penalty. - On toll roads and express lanes, the initial penalty can reach $60 and the cumulative maximum is $100 per violation.15California Legislative Information. California Code VEH 40258 – Procedure on Toll Evasion Violations
If you’ve never had a violation with that particular toll agency before, contact its customer service within 21 days, open an account, and pay the original toll. The penalty is waived.16California Legislative Information. California Vehicle Code 40258 It’s a genuine lifeline, especially for riders who didn’t realize a facility required payment or a transponder.
Ignore the notices entirely and the unpaid amount is reported to the DMV. The DMV places a hold on your motorcycle’s registration, blocking renewal until every outstanding toll and penalty is cleared.17California Department of Motor Vehicles. Contesting a Violation
Motorcycle plates are smaller and mounted differently than car plates, and toll cameras misread them more often than you’d expect. If you get a notice you think is wrong, you have 21 days from the mailing date to contest it in writing. The agency investigates and mails you the result. If you disagree, you have 15 days from that mailing to deposit the penalty amount and request a formal administrative review, which the agency must hold within 90 days.
