What the Ticket Actually Costs
A window tint violation is a non-moving equipment offense. Because it carries no points, it doesn’t count toward the 11-point threshold that triggers a license suspension, and it doesn’t show up on your record as a moving violation.1Department of Motor Vehicles. The fine is where it stings. A single tint violation can run up to $150, plus a mandatory state surcharge. Officers can write up each non-compliant window as a separate offense, so a sedan with illegal film on all four side windows can generate a considerably larger bill than a driver expects when they see one ticket in their hand.
Will Insurance Go Up?
Because the violation is non-moving and carries no points, insurance companies generally don’t treat it as a rating event. Your premium isn’t the pressure point here. The fine and the inspection problem are.
How to Get a Tint Ticket Dismissed

The deadline is short. You have until a half hour after sunset on the first full business day after receiving the ticket to complete the repair. Weekends and major federal holidays don’t count, so a Friday afternoon ticket gives you until Monday evening.
Once the tint is off, get written proof. The court accepts any of the following:
- A correction statement from an official New York State inspection station, signed by the person who did the work and including the station’s facility number.
- A correction statement on the letterhead of an auto repair shop, signed by the person who performed the repair.
- A signed statement from a police officer confirming the correction.
- A receipt or other evidence showing you did the work yourself, together with proof of purchase for any materials.
The statement has to reach the court with jurisdiction by the return date on the summons. It must be affirmed as true under penalty of perjury and identify the person who did the work, their position, the date of the repair, and a confirmation that the equipment now complies with the law.2New York State Senate. The Inspection Problem
Even if you never get pulled over, illegal tint catches up with the car at inspection time. Since January 1, 2017, every New York State vehicle inspection includes a tint check with a meter that measures Visible Light Transmission.3NY DMV. A failed inspection means no valid sticker, and driving without one is its own separate violation. You’ll need to strip the film and return for a re-inspection before the station issues a passing sticker.
A Few Things Worth Knowing
The 70% VLT rule applies to the windshield and both front side windows on every passenger vehicle. Out-of-state drivers get no pass. New York enforces its tint law based on where the car is being driven, not where it’s registered, so tint that’s legal at home can still draw a ticket here.
