Do You Have to Take a Sign Test to Renew Your NC License?

No, most North Carolina drivers do not have to take a sign test to renew an NC license. Under N.C. General Statute 20-7(c), the NCDMV cannot require a written or road test at renewal of an unexpired license unless you’ve been convicted of a traffic violation since your current license was issued, or you have a physical or mental condition that affects your ability to drive.¹ For everyone else, a vision screening at the counter is the only test involved.

When a Sign Test Can Be Required

The statute names two triggers, and only two:

A traffic conviction since your current license was issued. The NCDMV may then require a knowledge test, a road test, or both.
A physical or mental condition that impairs safe driving. Reports can come from doctors, law enforcement, family members, or other state DMVs.

If neither applies, the NCDMV has no authority to add testing to your renewal.¹

Age is not a trigger. Drivers 66 and older renew every five years instead of eight, but the NCDMV does not add tests based on age alone.

What the Sign Test Looks Like if You Do Need It

If you fall into one of the two categories above, the knowledge test includes a sign identification section. You’re shown a sign by shape and color, without the words that would normally appear on it, and asked to identify what type of sign it is and what it means.²

The main categories:

Regulatory signs. White background with black, red, or green markings. Stop signs are eight-sided and red; yield signs are downward-pointing triangles in red and white.
Warning signs. Diamond-shaped, yellow background, black symbols. School zone and pedestrian crossing signs may use fluorescent yellow-green.
Work zone signs. Diamond or rectangular, orange background.
Guide signs. Rectangular in green, blue, or brown. Directions and information about destinations or services.
Railroad crossing signs. A round yellow warning sign with an “X” and “RR,” plus the white X-shaped crossbuck at the crossing itself.

The Vision Test You Cannot Skip In Person

Every in-person renewal in North Carolina includes a vision screening. The statute requires it.¹ You need to demonstrate at least 20/40 visual acuity. If you need glasses or contacts to hit that mark, a “corrective lenses” restriction is added to your license.

Falling short of 20/40 at the screening means a referral to a licensed eye specialist. Depending on that exam, the NCDMV may add restrictions or, in severe cases, decline to renew. Bring your current prescription and the glasses or contacts you actually use.

How to Renew Without Any Test at All

The way to avoid both the sign test and the vision screening is to renew online. When you renew online the NCDMV can waive the examination that would otherwise be required, including the vision check.¹

Online eligibility recently expanded. As of October 2025, eligible drivers without a REAL ID can renew online for a second consecutive time.³ Drivers with a REAL ID can also renew online consecutively, provided they’ve been in an office and had a new photo taken since their last renewal.⁴ Before the change, every other renewal required an office visit.

To qualify for online renewal, your license cannot be expired, and you cannot have any restriction other than “corrective lenses.”⁵ Log in or create an account on the NCDMV website and follow the prompts.

Renewing by mail also allows the NCDMV to waive the written and road tests, but mail renewal is limited to active-duty military stationed out of state and residents living outside North Carolina for at least 30 continuous days.⁶ Military spouses and dependents temporarily residing out of state can renew by mail once in their lifetime.⁷ A vision statement from a vision specialist or driver license examiner in your temporary state is required, dated within six months of your application.

If Your License Is Already Expired

The “no test at renewal” protection only applies to renewal of an unexpired license. Once a license has been expired for an extended period, the NCDMV can require the full battery of tests, including the sign test and potentially a road test, treating you closer to a new applicant than a renewing driver.

Driving on an expired license is a “no operator’s license” infraction in North Carolina, with a fine of up to $100 and three points on your driving record. Many auto insurance policies also exclude coverage for losses that occur while driving illegally, which can include driving on an expired license. An accident during that period could leave the claim denied.

A temporary moratorium currently softens some of this. Class C licenses expiring on or after July 1, 2025, remain valid for driving within North Carolina for up to two years past the printed expiration date, and the moratorium runs through December 31, 2027.⁸ Renewing on time is still the safer path, since an expired card won’t satisfy REAL ID requirements at the airport regardless of the moratorium, and the retesting risk returns once it ends.
