The GO ID is the fastest option for returning customers. What Else You’ll Provide at Purchase
The ID is one piece. When you buy the license, you’ll also give your name, mailing address, date of birth, height, weight, and eye color. Your residential address is what the CDFW uses to determine whether you pay the resident or non-resident fee.
How Your ID Address Affects the Fee
California treats you as a resident if you’ve lived continuously in the state for at least six months immediately before applying. Active-duty military personnel and Job Corps enrollees count as residents no matter how long they’ve been stationed here.4California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The gap between the two rates matters. Where to Bring Your ID
You have three ways to buy a license, and each uses your ID a little differently.
Online is fastest. Through the CDFW’s license portal, you enter your personal information and ID number, pay with a debit or credit card, and print a temporary license immediately. In person works at hundreds of authorized agents across California, including tackle shops, sporting goods stores, and CDFW License Sales Offices. Bring the physical ID document itself. If you’re applying for a reduced-fee license as a low-income senior on SSI or CAPI, that transaction can only happen at a CDFW License Sales Office, and you’ll need to bring proof of your enrollment.4California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Carrying ID Versus Carrying the License While Fishing
Once you have the license, the rule is about carrying the license, not your ID. You must have your license on your person or within immediate reach while fishing. Divers get some leeway: if you’re diving from a boat, the license can stay on the boat; if you’re diving from shore, it can be within 500 yards.3California Legislative Information. California accepts a digital license displayed through the official CDFW License App, and if you use the app you don’t need the physical card. Two hard limits apply. A screenshot or photo of the license isn’t valid, and if your phone dies or otherwise won’t display the license, you’re technically in violation.7California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
