Ohio does not require you to renew your CCW to keep carrying concealed. Since June 13, 2022, any adult 21 or older who can legally possess a firearm may carry it concealed in Ohio without a license.1Ohio Legislature. Senate Bill 215 – 134th General Assembly Ohio CCW renewal is still worth doing for most license holders, though, because the card unlocks things permitless carry does not: recognition in other states, protection near schools under federal law, and a smoother background check when you buy from a dealer.
Should You Renew at All?
If you never leave Ohio and never pass within 1,000 feet of a school, permitless carry covers you. Three situations change that calculation.
Federal law prohibits possessing a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school unless you hold a state-issued license that required a law enforcement background check before issuance. A CHL satisfies that requirement; carrying without one near a school can expose you to a federal felony even though Ohio’s own school-safety-zone statute carves out an exception for license holders.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 USC 922 – Unlawful Acts
Reciprocity is the second reason. Many states honor Ohio’s CHL through agreements maintained by the Ohio Attorney General.3Office of the Ohio Attorney General. Concealed Carry Reciprocity Agreements Without a license, you have no document for another state to recognize, and carrying concealed while traveling could mean criminal charges.
A valid CHL can also speed up the federal background check when you buy a firearm from a licensed dealer, since you have already cleared an extensive screening.
When Your License Expires
An Ohio CHL is valid for five years from the date it was issued or last renewed.4Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Code 2923.125 – Application and Licensing Process After it expires, a 30-day grace period keeps the license legally valid.5Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Section 2923.126 – Duties of Licensed Individual You can file for renewal at any time before or after the expiration date, and there is no penalty for renewing late.6Office of the Ohio Attorney General. If your license fully lapses past the grace period, you cannot lean on it for the federal school-zone protection or for out-of-state reciprocity while the renewal is pending. Permitless carry still covers you inside Ohio during that window.
Who Qualifies for Renewal
You must still meet the eligibility rules for an original license, with one key exception: renewals do not require a new competency certificate. The statute explicitly waives that step.4Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Code 2923.125 – Application and Licensing Process Everything else stays the same:
- Legal U.S. residency, plus at least 45 days living in Ohio.
- Age 21 or older.
- No disqualifying criminal history. Felony convictions, drug trafficking offenses, misdemeanor crimes of violence, and negligent assault convictions all disqualify you.
- No active civil or temporary protection order from any state.
- No judicial finding of mental incompetence and no involuntary commitment.
What to Bring
You will need a freshly completed renewal application. Photocopies of an old application are not accepted; the form is available from your county sheriff or the Ohio Attorney General’s website.6Office of the Ohio Attorney General. - Your current or expired CHL.
- A valid Ohio driver’s license or state ID. If your address does not match, bring a utility bill or bank statement as proof of residency.
- A 2-inch by 2-inch passport-style color photo. Some sheriff’s offices will take one for you at the appointment, typically for around $15.
On the application itself, you must certify that you have reread the firearms safety pamphlet published by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission.4Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Answer honestly; false statements on the application are their own offense.
Fees
Renewal fees are nonrefundable and depend on how long you have lived in Ohio:
- $50 for residents of five years or more.
- $60 for residents of less than five years.
- Waived for active or reserve members of the U.S. armed forces and for anyone who has retired from or been honorably discharged from military service.7Delaware County Sheriff’s Office. Concealed Carry Fees and Signs
Cash and money orders are accepted almost everywhere. Some offices take cards but may charge a processing fee. Call before you go.
Where and How to File
You file in person at the sheriff’s office in the county where you live, or in an adjacent county. Most offices require an appointment scheduled in advance, and walk-ins are rarely accepted.8Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Concealed Carry Permit
At your appointment, the sheriff’s office will take your electronic fingerprints through the WebCheck system and submit them to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and, when applicable, the FBI. A check through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System is also run.9Lake County, Ohio. Concealed Carry Registration, Fingerprinting, Background Checks
How Long Processing Takes
The sheriff has up to 45 days to process a renewal application.9Lake County, Ohio. Concealed Carry Registration, Fingerprinting, Background Checks Many offices finish faster, but plan for the full window if your expiration date is close. If you filed during the 30-day grace period, your old license continues to cover you while you wait.
If Your Renewal Is Denied
A denial has to come with written notice explaining the specific reason. The most common triggers are criminal record hits the applicant did not expect: old charges, out-of-state convictions, or records that were supposed to be sealed but still surface in the system.
You can appeal to the court of common pleas in the county where you applied, or you can challenge the accuracy of the criminal record results. If the problem is an incorrect BCI record, dispute it directly with BCI and get it corrected before you reapply.4Ohio Legislative Service Commission. After You Get the New License
Carry the physical license whenever you carry concealed. If you move, notify the sheriff who issued the license within 45 days of the address change. One boundary is worth flagging: renewal does not open every door. A valid CHL still does not let you carry inside police stations, jails, courthouses, secured airport areas, state mental health facilities, most college buildings, most places of worship, or school buildings, and other restricted locations apply as well.5Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Section 2923.126 – Duties of Licensed Individual Know those rules before you rely on the license in a new setting.
