Do You Pay Tax in Jersey? Rates, GST, and Exemptions

If you live, work, shop, or own property in Jersey, you pay tax. The island charges income tax at a maximum rate of 20%, a 5% goods and services tax on most purchases, social security contributions, and a transaction tax when you buy property. It does not charge capital gains tax, inheritance tax, or gift tax. So the answer to whether you pay tax in Jersey is yes, but the overall burden is lighter than in the United Kingdom, and how much you owe depends heavily on whether Jersey treats you as a resident.

Whether Jersey Treats You as a Resident

Residency drives everything. Residents pay Jersey tax on their worldwide income. Non-residents pay only on income sourced in Jersey, such as rent from an island property.

You are resident and ordinarily resident for income tax if you spend 183 days or more in Jersey during a tax year.1States Assembly. Jersey Residency The count is in calendar days, with no half-day rule.

A second test catches regular visitors. If you average more than 90 nights per year over a four-year period, you become resident and ordinarily resident from the start of year five.2Government of Jersey. Residency for Jersey Income Tax

A third route surprises people with holiday homes. If accommodation is available for your use in Jersey and you stay there for even a single night, you are treated as resident for the whole tax year.2Government of Jersey. How Much Income Tax You Actually Pay

Jersey’s income tax under the Income Tax (Jersey) Law 1961 runs two calculations in parallel and charges you the lower of the two.3Jersey Legal Information Board. Income Tax (Jersey) Law 1961 Nobody in Jersey pays more than 20% of their taxable income.

The Standard Rate

The first calculation applies a flat 20% to your income after allowable expenses and pension contributions. For higher earners, this typically produces the smaller bill, so 20% is effectively what they pay.

The Marginal Relief Calculation

The second calculation protects lower earners. It subtracts allowable expenses, pension contributions, and a tax exemption threshold before applying a 26% rate to what remains. For the 2026 tax year, the exemption threshold is £21,250 for a single person.4Government of Jersey. 2026 Tax Allowances and Reliefs Because a large chunk of income is shielded before 26% bites, the effective rate on total income usually sits well below 20%.

Revenue Jersey runs both calculations automatically and applies the lower figure.

Filing and Late Penalties

Paper returns are due by midnight on 31 May. Electronic returns get an extension to 31 July. Miss the deadline and the penalty is £300, or the full assessment if it is less than £300.5Government of Jersey. Penalties for Late Personal Tax Returns

Goods and Services Tax at 5%

Jersey charges 5% GST on most purchases on the island, and the tax is usually built into displayed prices.6Government of Jersey. GST Taxed on Goods and Services By international standards, that is low.

What Escapes the 5%

Some supplies are zero-rated, meaning the business charges 0% but can still reclaim GST on its own costs. Others are exempt, sitting outside the system entirely. The main items that escape the 5% charge are:7Government of Jersey. GST Liability of Goods and Services

  • Buying, selling, or renting accommodation (zero-rated).
  • Exports (zero-rated).
  • Financial services and insurance (exempt).
  • Medical supplies and prescriptions (exempt).
  • Childcare, school fees, and postal services (exempt).

One quirk to know at restaurants: voluntary tips carry no GST, but a mandatory service charge added to the bill does.

Ordering Goods from Off-Island

If you order online from outside Jersey, you owe 5% GST on anything valued at £60 or more, calculated on the combined value of items received on the same day, including shipping.8Government of Jersey. Paying GST for Online Shopping and Imported Goods Customs will hold the package until you declare and pay through the online portal. Below £60, packages generally pass through untouched.

Social Security and Long-Term Care

Social security contributions are separate from income tax and fund pensions, maternity benefits, and other insurance.

Employees pay 6% of gross earnings. Employers pay 6.5%. Those rates apply on monthly earnings between the lower earnings limit of £1,296 and the standard earnings limit of £6,062, with a reduced rate above that up to an upper earnings limit of £27,632 per month, at which point contributions stop.9Government of Jersey. About Social Security Contributions

Self-employed people pay Class 2 contributions covering both portions: 12.5% on annual earnings up to £72,744, 2.5% between £72,744 and £331,584, and 0% above that ceiling.10Government of Jersey. Class 2 Social Security Contributions

On top of social security, Jersey charges a long-term care contribution to fund nursing and residential care. The maximum rate is 1.5% of total income, and a marginal long-term care rate of 1.95% applies to income above the threshold, working on the same “lower of two calculations” principle as income tax.11Government of Jersey. Buying Property: Stamp Duty or Land Transaction Tax

Buying property in Jersey triggers one of two transaction taxes. Freehold purchases attract stamp duty under the Stamp Duties and Fees (Jersey) Law 1998, with rates last updated in April 2025.12Jersey Legal Information Board. Stamp Duties and Fees (Jersey) Law 1998 Share transfer flats, where you buy shares in a company that confer a right to occupy, are taxed under the Land Transaction Tax (Jersey) Law 2009.13Jersey Legal Information Board. Taxation (Land Transactions) (Jersey) Law 2009

Land transaction tax runs on a progressive sliding scale:14Government of Jersey. Calculating Your Land Transaction Tax

  • Up to £50,000: 0.5%
  • £50,001 to £300,000: 1.5%
  • £300,001 to £500,000: 2%
  • £500,001 to £700,000: 3%
  • £700,001 to £1 million: 3.5%
  • £1 million to £1.5 million: 4.5%
  • £1.5 million to £2 million: 5.5%
  • £2 million to £3 million: 7.5%
  • £3 million to £6 million: 10%
  • Over £6 million: 11%

These are bands, not flat rates, so a £500,000 property is not charged 2% on the whole price. A £90 flat fee is added to every transaction, and higher rates apply if you already own other property.

First-Time Buyer Relief

First-time buyers of a property valued at £700,000 or less get a significant reduction. Nothing is owed on the first £350,000, and only 1% applies between £350,000 and £600,000, with a taper between £600,000 and £700,000.15Government of Jersey. First Time Home Buyers Properties above £700,000 do not qualify. The relief is once in a lifetime and does not need to be repaid.14Government of Jersey. Calculating Your Land Transaction Tax

Both taxes must be paid before the transaction is registered. The Royal Court will not register a document until stamp duty has been paid.12Jersey Legal Information Board. Stamp Duties and Fees (Jersey) Law 1998

Taxes Jersey Does Not Charge

There is no capital gains tax, no inheritance tax, and no gift tax in Jersey. There is no wealth tax, and no VAT in the traditional sense, just the 5% GST. Assets can pass on death or be given away during your lifetime without triggering a tax event. This does not remove tax on the income those assets generate while you are alive, but it makes estate planning considerably simpler than in the UK.

Extra Complication for U.S. Citizens

Americans face a wrinkle no one else does. The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live, and there is no comprehensive income tax treaty between the U.S. and Jersey to prevent double taxation.16PwC. Jersey, Channel Islands – Individual – Foreign Tax Relief and Tax Treaties Jersey has full double taxation agreements with the UK, Luxembourg, Singapore, and roughly a dozen other jurisdictions, but the U.S. is not among them.

Two federal-side reliefs do the work instead. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion allows qualifying U.S. citizens abroad to exclude up to $132,900 of earned income from federal tax for the 2026 tax year, or up to $265,800 for a married couple where both spouses qualify.17IRS. Figuring the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion The Foreign Tax Credit lets you credit Jersey income tax paid against your U.S. bill. Investment income is not covered by the exclusion, so anyone with a portfolio should expect to file in both jurisdictions and may owe both.

If You Run a Business in Jersey

Jersey operates a “zero-ten” corporate tax system. The general rate of corporate income tax is 0%. Certain sectors pay more:18Government of Jersey. Moving to Jersey: Money and Tax

  • Financial services companies pay 10% on regulated financial services income.
  • Utility companies pay 20%.
  • Rental income and property development profits from Jersey land are taxed at 20%.
  • Large corporate retailers with cumulative Jersey turnover of £2 million or more pay a variable rate up to 20%.

The 0% headline rate comes with strings. Companies carrying on “relevant activities” (banking, insurance, fund management, holding company functions, and intellectual property, among others) must meet economic substance requirements: they need to be directed and managed in Jersey, carry out core income-generating activities there, and have adequate employees, expenditure, and physical assets on the island. Failure can bring fines up to £100,000 or removal from the Jersey registry.19Government of Jersey. Economic Substance for Jersey Companies and Partnerships

Any business making taxable supplies of £300,000 or more over the preceding 12 months must register for GST and start collecting the tax. The same threshold applies to overseas retailers selling into Jersey.20Government of Jersey. GST Registration Thresholds
