Does IEHP Cover Gym Membership? Free Classes and Wellness Centers

No, IEHP does not cover a gym membership. None of the three Inland Empire Health Plan products — IEHP Medi-Cal, IEHP DualChoice for people with both Medicare and Medi-Cal, or IEHP Covered through Covered California — lists a gym, fitness center, or fitness reimbursement as a covered benefit.1IEHP. No Gym Benefit on Any IEHP Plan

The IEHP Medi-Cal benefits page covers doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, preventive care, mental health, vision, and transportation, with no fitness line item.1IEHP. Medi-Cal Benefits and Services The DualChoice Summary of Benefits similarly lists hospital care, doctor visits, hearing aids, dental, vision, and transportation, with nothing on fitness.2IEHP. DSNP Summary of Benefits The IEHP Covered California plans go further and explicitly exclude weight loss programs other than preventive behavioral counseling, and they do not reference gym access.4IEHP. Why Other California Medi-Cal Plans Are Different

Some Medi-Cal managed care plans elsewhere in California do offer gym benefits, which is often what prompts IEHP members to ask. Santa Clara Family Health Plan provides free YMCA memberships to its Medi-Cal and DualConnect members at YMCA of Silicon Valley locations.11Santa Clara Family Health Plan. Fitness Membership L.A. Care offers free fitness classes at its community resource centers and one-on-one coaching with trainers and dietitians.12L.A. Care Health Plan. Wellness Benefits Each managed care plan decides independently what supplemental services to offer. IEHP has put its wellness dollars into running its own Community Wellness Centers rather than into third-party gym memberships.
