Does Maryland Have a Grace Period for Registration Renewal?

Maryland does not offer a grace period for vehicle registration renewal. The day after your registration expires, your vehicle is no longer legal to drive on a Maryland highway, and the preset fine for operating an unregistered vehicle is $290.¹ The MVA mails a renewal notice about 60 days before your expiration date, and that window is your grace period in practice: the time to renew is before the date on your registration card, not after.²

What the Law Says About Expired Tags

The statute is short and direct. If a vehicle is not registered, you may not drive it on a highway in Maryland.¹ There is no built-in tolerance for being a day late, a week late, or a month late. Expiration means expiration.

The standard citation carries a $290 preset fine and zero points on your driving record. If the case is taken to court rather than paid through the preset fine schedule, the statutory maximum for a misdemeanor violation of the Maryland Vehicle Law rises to $500.³ The same $290 fine applies if you let someone else drive your unregistered vehicle on public roads.

Other Consequences of Letting Registration Lapse

The traffic ticket is only part of the exposure. Once your registration is expired, you cannot complete any MVA transaction that requires an active registration until you renew and pay whatever penalties have attached. Emissions stations and toll facilities will also flag an expired plate, and any citation issued during the lapse becomes another item you have to clear before you can move forward.

Because insurance carriers report electronically to the MVA, driving on expired registration typically means driving during a period when your coverage picture is also being watched. A gap in insurance during the lapse can compound quickly into separate penalties on top of the registration fine.

How to Renew Before You Lapse

Maryland gives you several ways to renew, and most of them take only a few minutes if your record is clean. The MVA sends a renewal notice roughly 60 days ahead of your expiration date. You can renew for one, two, or three years at a time.⁴

Online through the myMVA portal, available 24 hours a day.
By phone at 1-410-768-7000 using a touch-tone keypad.
At a self-service kiosk located at any MVA branch.
In person at a full-service MVA branch office.

Online, phone, and kiosk renewals require that the name, address, insurance, and vehicle information on your renewal notice still be accurate. If anything has changed, you’ll need to update it first or handle the whole transaction in person. Have your registration card or renewal notice, your insurance information, and a Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, or mobile wallet payment ready. Kiosks also accept checks.⁴

One address point worth flagging: Maryland law requires you to notify the MVA of an address change within 30 days.⁵ Missed renewal notices are a common reason people discover their registration has expired only after they get pulled over.

What Can Block Your Renewal

Because there is no grace period, discovering a problem at the last minute is a real risk. Three things routinely stop a renewal from going through.

Insurance

You cannot renew without active insurance that meets Maryland’s minimum liability coverage: $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $15,000 per accident for property damage. Uninsured motorist coverage is required at the same minimums.⁶ Your carrier verifies coverage electronically with the MVA, so a lapse shows up in the system whether you report it or not.

Emissions (VEIP)

Most gasoline-powered vehicles have to pass a Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program test every two years, and you must complete it before the MVA will process your renewal.⁷ Original owners of new vehicles get a 72-month exemption; used-vehicle buyers do not. Missing the VEIP deadline itself adds a $30 late fee the day after the due date.⁸

Flags on Your Vehicle Record

Local police, toll authorities, and other agencies can place a flag on your record that blocks renewal until it is cleared. Unpaid parking tickets, red-light and speed camera citations, and toll violations are the most common triggers.⁹

Clearing a flag takes two steps: resolve the underlying issue with the entity that placed it, then pay the MVA’s administrative fee for parking, toll, speed camera, or red-light camera flags. Only the placing entity can remove the flag, and removal can take several weeks after everything is paid. If your renewal date is close, do not wait to check for flags.⁹

If You’ve Already Missed the Deadline

There is no path to avoid the citation risk once your tags are expired other than not driving the vehicle until you renew. Renew as soon as possible through any of the methods above, after resolving whatever caused the lapse. If a flag or a VEIP requirement is blocking you, clearing that comes first; the MVA will not process a renewal around it.

Military Deployment

Active-duty service members stationed outside Maryland may have additional protections under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. If you’re deployed or stationed out of state and cannot renew on time, contact the MVA directly with your military orders to discuss your options. Reaching out before your registration lapses is easier than sorting it out afterward.

Disabled veterans with a 100% disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs can receive permanent registration cards and stickers, which removes the renewal cycle from the picture entirely.¹⁰
