Does WellCare of KY Cover Wegovy? Medicaid, Medicare Bridge, Costs

WellCare of Kentucky does not cover Wegovy for weight loss under its Medicaid plan. Kentucky Medicaid excludes drugs prescribed primarily for weight loss, and a 2026 state law locks that exclusion in place. Wegovy is available through Kentucky Medicaid only for two narrow non-weight indications, and only with prior authorization. If you’re on a WellCare Medicare plan instead, there’s a separate federal program starting July 1, 2026 that can put Wegovy within reach at $50 a month for weight reduction.

Why Kentucky Medicaid Won’t Pay for Wegovy for Weight Loss

Kentucky Medicaid has long excluded medications used for weight loss, relying on a federal provision that lets state Medicaid programs leave those drugs off their formularies even when the FDA has approved them for that use.1KFF. Medicaid Coverage of and Spending on GLP-1s The state’s GLP-1 receptor agonist prior authorization criteria, updated in October 2025, require prescribers to confirm that semaglutide and similar drugs are being used for Type 2 diabetes and to attest they are not being used for weight-related purposes.2Kentucky Medicaid Portal (MedImpact). The 2026 Kentucky legislature reinforced this policy through House Bill 2, which prohibits Medicaid coverage of prescription drugs prescribed primarily for weight loss, and Senate Bill 65, which nullified a proposed administrative regulation that would have removed the ban. Governor Andy Beshear vetoed both measures, and the legislature overrode both vetoes in April 2026.4Hoptown Chronicle. The Two Ways Wegovy Can Be Approved Under Kentucky Medicaid

Wegovy is available through Kentucky Medicaid for two specific medical indications under prior authorization criteria effective January 3, 2026. Both pathways exclude patients with Type 2 diabetes.5Kentucky Medicaid Portal (MedImpact). Wegovy PA Criteria Effective 1.3.2026

Cardiovascular Risk Reduction

Wegovy may be approved for patients 45 or older with established cardiovascular disease, such as a prior heart attack, stroke, or symptomatic peripheral artery disease. The patient must have a BMI of at least 27, be on optimized heart medications including a statin, and be following a diet and exercise plan. A hemoglobin A1c of 6.5% or higher, Class IV heart failure, or end-stage kidney disease disqualifies the patient.5Kentucky Medicaid Portal (MedImpact). Wegovy PA Criteria Effective 1.3.2026

Liver Disease (MASH)

Wegovy injections may also be approved for adults 18 and older with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis and moderate to advanced fibrosis. The diagnosis must be confirmed by liver biopsy or by specific blood and imaging tests, and the prescription must come from or be coordinated with a gastroenterologist or hepatologist. Cirrhosis and liver cancer are exclusions, and the tablet form is not approved for this use.5Kentucky Medicaid Portal (MedImpact). Wegovy PA Criteria Effective 1.3.2026

For either indication, approvals last six months and require renewal with documentation of benefit, such as at least a 5% reduction in body weight for cardiovascular patients or improved fibrosis scores for MASH patients. Only one GLP-1 formulation is allowed at a time, and Wegovy cannot be combined with another GLP-1 or dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist.6Kentucky Medicaid Portal (MedImpact). If You’re on WellCare Medicare in Kentucky

Standard Medicare Part D does not cover drugs prescribed solely for weight loss. Under WellCare’s Part D and Medicare Advantage plans, Wegovy may be covered only when it’s prescribed to reduce cardiovascular risk in adults with established heart disease who are overweight or obese, and only if the drug appears on your specific plan’s formulary. Prior authorization, step therapy, or quantity limits may apply.7WellCare. Does Medicare Cover Weight Loss Drugs

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program

Starting July 1, 2026, a federal demonstration called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge offers a separate route to Wegovy for weight reduction. The Bridge operates outside the regular Part D benefit. It isn’t run by WellCare or any Part D plan; a single central processor handles all prior authorization requests and claims. Eligible Medicare beneficiaries pay a flat $50 copay per monthly supply, regardless of which Part D plan they’re enrolled in.8CMS. Medicare GLP-1 Bridge
