Does Wellpoint Cover Wegovy in Massachusetts? 2026 Rules and Appeals

Wellpoint’s Massachusetts plans, offered through the Group Insurance Commission, cover Wegovy for weight loss through June 30, 2026. Starting July 1, 2026, that coverage ends for members using the drug solely for weight management. Coverage continues in two situations: if you’re taking a GLP-1 for diabetes, or if you have a BMI of 27 or higher along with an FDA-approved comorbid condition.1Massachusetts GIC. Who Actually Runs the Drug Benefit

Wellpoint offers several GIC plans, including Total Choice, PLUS, and Community Choice for non-Medicare members, and a Medicare Extension plan for retirees.2Wellpoint. Health Plans Whichever plan you’re on, the prescription drug benefit for non-Medicare GIC plans is administered by CVS Caremark, not Wellpoint directly. Formulary decisions, prior authorization requirements, and coverage rules for Wegovy all run through CVS Caremark, and Wellpoint states it isn’t responsible for CVS Caremark’s policies.3Wellpoint. Wegovy does appear on the CVS Caremark formulary used by GIC plans, listed under the “Antiobesity” category alongside Saxenda, Qsymia, and orlistat. Diabetes-focused GLP-1s like Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Rybelsus sit under a separate “Antidiabetics” category. Being on the formulary isn’t the same as being covered. The document itself warns that “your specific prescription benefit plan design may not cover certain medications, products or categories, regardless of their appearance in this document.”4Wellpoint. Starting July 1, 2026, GIC plans no longer cover GLP-1 medications for treatment of obesity in members who don’t have an FDA-approved comorbidity. After that date, prescriptions are handled through your regular community healthcare provider rather than a specialty program, and every GLP-1 prescription requires prior authorization through CVS Caremark.1Massachusetts GIC. Who Still Qualifies After July 1

Coverage continues for two groups. The first is members using a GLP-1 to treat diabetes. The second is members with a BMI of 27 or higher who also have an FDA-approved comorbid condition.1Massachusetts GIC. April Update on Vida Health Program and GLP-1 Coverage

Prior Authorization Criteria for Wegovy

For members who still qualify, CVS Caremark’s prior authorization criteria are specific. For weight management in adults, you need a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher paired with at least one weight-related comorbid condition such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia. You must also have participated in a comprehensive weight management program involving behavioral modification, diet, and physical activity for at least six months before starting the medication.8CVS Caremark. Wegovy Prior Authorization Criteria

To keep therapy going, you need to have completed at least three months at a stable maintenance dose and demonstrated a weight loss of at least 5% from baseline, or maintained an earlier 5% weight loss. Wegovy can also be approved for cardiovascular risk reduction in adults aged 45 and older who have established cardiovascular disease and a BMI above 27, provided the patient doesn’t have type 2 diabetes. A separate approval pathway exists for noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis.8CVS Caremark. Wegovy Prior Authorization Criteria

Appealing a Denied Wegovy Claim

If CVS Caremark denies your Wegovy claim, you can appeal. Wellpoint’s member handbook describes a formal appeals program for prescription drug decisions, with an internal review process and the option for external review if the internal appeal doesn’t succeed. You have to complete the internal appeal before filing a lawsuit. CVS Caremark’s GIC customer service line for prescription drug questions is 877-876-7214.9Wellpoint. Wellpoint PLUS Member Handbook
