Does Your Tag Expire on Your Birthday in Georgia?

Yes. In Georgia, your vehicle tag does expire on your birthday if you are the individual owner, and it expires at the stroke of midnight, with no grace period the next day. The renewal window opens 30 days before that date, and you can renew any time inside that window online, by mail, in person at your county tag office, or at a self-service kiosk.1Department of Revenue. Whose Birthday the State Uses

Georgia law sets the registration period as the 30 days ending at midnight on the birthday of the person whose name appears first on the title. If two people co-own the vehicle, only the first-listed owner’s birthday matters; the second owner’s date has no effect on the tag. The moment that birthday passes without a renewal, the registration is expired and you can be cited on the spot.1Department of Revenue. Georgia County Registration Renewal Periods Vary

A handful of counties still operate under an older local system that packs all renewals into January through April, grouping drivers by birth quarter rather than exact birthday. January-through-March birthdays renew in January, April-through-June in February, and so on. No county has been allowed to join that system since January 1, 2000, so unless you already know you live in one of those legacy counties, the birthday rule is what applies to you.

Renewing Inside the 30-Day Window

You should receive a renewal notice by the start of your birthday month. You can renew in any of four ways:2Department of Revenue. Renew Vehicle Registration

  • Online through the Georgia DRIVES e-Services portal, using your plate number or VIN plus your driver’s license number or the Letter ID from your renewal notice. Payment is by debit card, credit card, or electronic check.
  • By mail to your county tag office, allowing enough lead time for the payment to arrive and be processed before your birthday.
  • In person at your county tag office with your Georgia driver’s license or ID.
  • At a self-service kiosk in participating counties, which prints your new decal on the spot.

Before you renew, your Georgia liability insurance must be on file with the Department of Revenue. Insurers report coverage electronically, and if yours has not transmitted the information, the system will block the transaction until it clears.3Justia Law. What It Costs

The standard license plate renewal fee is $20 for a passenger car or lightweight pickup.5Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicles Fees, Fines, and Penalties Online renewals add a convenience fee for the card or e-check transaction.

Whether you owe an annual vehicle tax at renewal depends on when the vehicle was first titled in Georgia. Most vehicles titled after March 1, 2013, fall under the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT), a one-time 7% payment at purchase; those owners pay no annual ad valorem tax at renewal. Vehicles still under the older system continue to pay annual ad valorem tax each year on the birthday cycle.6Department of Revenue. If You Miss Your Birthday

There is no grace period. Once midnight passes, two separate costs can hit you.

The first is a criminal fine. Driving with an expired registration is a misdemeanor with a fine of $25 for a first offense and $100 for a second or later offense, and some jurisdictions add court fees that raise the total.7Justia Law. Georgia Code 40-2-8 – Operation of Unregistered Vehicle or Vehicle Without Current License Plate, Revalidation Decal, or County Decal

The second is a late renewal penalty at the tag office. It runs 10% of any ad valorem tax owed (with a $5 minimum) plus 25% of the license plate fee.5Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicles Fees, Fines, and Penalties These are stacked on top of any traffic citation, so waiting only compounds the bill.

When the Birthday Rule Doesn’t Apply

The birthday cycle is for individually owned vehicles. A few situations follow different clocks, and it’s worth knowing which one you’re in.

Business-owned vehicles. Vehicles titled to a business, dealer, distributor, or similar entity expire by the first letter of the business name on an alphabetical schedule. Names starting with A or B expire in January, C or D in February, and so on through the year.8Department of Revenue. Leased vehicles. If you lease, Georgia treats you as the owner for registration purposes, so your tag still expires on your birthday, not on any schedule set by the leasing company.9Department of Revenue. Leased Vehicle Registration

A vehicle you just bought from a dealer. The dealer issues a Temporary Operating Permit good for 30 days, and you must register within that window at your county tag office. Dealers cannot extend a TOP or issue a second one.10Department of Revenue. Temporary Operating Permits (TOPs) After that first registration, the tag falls onto the birthday cycle.

A vehicle you just bought from a private seller. Georgia calls this a casual sale, and the deadline is tighter: seven business days from the purchase date to title and register.11Justia Law. Georgia Code 40-2-29 – Registration and License Plate Requirements After Purchase Miss it, and you owe 10% of the TAVT after day 30, then 1% more each month afterward.5Department of Revenue. A new Georgia resident. You have 30 days from your move date to register, using your out-of-state title, a Form T-22B inspection completed by a Georgia law enforcement officer, and the other standard documents.12Department of Revenue. New to Georgia? New residents pay TAVT at a reduced 3% rate rather than 7%.6Department of Revenue. Vehicle Taxes – Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) and Annual Ad Valorem Tax Once you’re registered, your annual renewal moves to your birthday like everyone else’s.

The practical takeaway: if the vehicle is in your name and you live in almost any Georgia county, mark the calendar for the month before your birthday and renew before midnight on the day itself. Everything else is either a different clock or a penalty for missing this one.
