Ebikes on Mackinac Island are banned for recreational use. The only people who may ride one are visitors and residents with a mobility disability, and only after registering a Class 1 ebike in person with the Mackinac Island Police Department. Class 2 and Class 3 ebikes are not eligible in their stock form, and there is no way to obtain a license before you arrive on the island.
Why Ebikes Are Off-Limits
Two overlapping rules do the work. Who Qualifies for the Disability Exception
If you have a physical impairment that substantially limits your ability to pedal a bicycle, you may ride a Class 1 ebike on the island. Class 1 is the only class allowed. That means the bike must provide electric assistance only while you are actively pedaling, cut off assistance at 20 miles per hour, and have no throttle.2Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. The state park rule adds one more requirement: your bike must carry a manufacturer’s label confirming its Class 1 status. If the label is missing, expect problems at registration.
Class 2 and Class 3 Ebikes
Class 3 ebikes, which assist up to 28 miles per hour, are never allowed on the island under any circumstances. Class 2 ebikes, which have a throttle, are also prohibited in stock form. There is one path forward: permanently remove the throttle, and the city will relabel the bike as Class 1 and register it.4City of Mackinac Island. How to Register a Qualifying Ebike
Registration happens in person at the Mackinac Island Police Department. Ebike licenses are explicitly excluded from the mail-in option that regular bicycles can use.4City of Mackinac Island. Forms and Documents
- Location: Mackinac Island Police Department, 7374 Market Street.
- Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Closed weekends.
- Cost: $3.50 per license, cash or check only, payable to City of Mackinac Island.
- Bring: your ebike for physical inspection, with the serial number located beforehand. Forms missing serial numbers will not be accepted.
- Inspection: staff verify the manufacturer’s Class 1 label and confirm the bike has no throttle.
Licenses are issued between April and October, which matches the tourist season. On busy summer days the registration line can back up, so leave time. If your Class 2 bike has had its throttle permanently removed, bring it in and explain the modification.
What Happens If You Ride Without a License
The island enforces the rule. Riding an unregistered or non-qualifying ebike can get the bike impounded and earn you a ticket. Reported fines start around $110 for a first offense and escalate for repeat violations within a two-year period, with a separate impound fee to retrieve the bike. During peak months, island police routinely stop ebike riders to check for registration.
Electric Wheelchairs and Mobility Scooters
Different device, different rules. Getting Around Without an Ebike
Most visitors do fine without a motor. The island is about 3.8 miles long, and the core downtown area is walkable in an afternoon.
Regular Bicycles
Pedal bikes are the most popular option. Rental shops cluster near the ferry docks, with prices typically running from about $11 to $25 per hour or $60 to $120 for a full day depending on the bike. The signature ride is M-185, the 8.2-mile shoreline loop that circles the island. It is the only state highway in the country without motorized traffic, and it is mostly flat. Horse-Drawn Taxis
Horse-drawn taxis run on a zone-based fare system, with adult fares from $9 to $11.50 per person depending on distance. Children ages 5 through 12 ride at half fare with an adult.8Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. Trails and Walking
