Every taxable purchase inside city limits is charged 8.25%.1California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. California City and County Sales and Use Tax Rates California’s statewide minimum is 7.25%. El Cajon sits a full point above that floor because of two district taxes: San Diego County’s half-cent TransNet program, which funds highways, transit, and local roads countywide through 2048,2SANDAG. About TransNet and El Cajon’s own half-cent local measure.
Retailers collect the full 8.25% at the register and remit it to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. When you buy from an out-of-state seller that doesn’t charge California tax, you owe the same rate as use tax on your state return.3California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Why El Cajon’s Rate Includes an Extra Half-Cent
Voters approved Proposition J in 2008, a half-cent local sales tax dedicated to public safety, street maintenance, and youth programs, with a 20-year sunset ending March 31, 2029. In November 2024, voters passed Measure J, renewing the same half-cent rate for another 20 years through March 31, 2049.4City of El Cajon. Missing either deadline triggers a 10% penalty, and the second installment also picks up a $10 administrative fee.9San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector. Special Assessments and Mello-Roos
Many parcels carry additional charges beyond the base rate and bonds. Special assessments cover things like flood control, vector control, and street lighting, and they appear as separate line items usually set as fixed dollar amounts rather than a percentage of value.11County of San Diego Auditor and Controller. Some homes sit inside a Mello-Roos Community Facilities District, authorized under California Government Code Sections 53311 through 53368.3, which lets local governments issue bonds for streets, sewers, parks, and schools and repay them through a parcel-level tax.12Justia Law.
