Epic Games Class Action Lawsuit and Refund Claims

The Epic Games class action lawsuit that people search for isn’t actually a class action. It’s a Federal Trade Commission enforcement action that ended in a $520 million order against Epic in 2022, with $245 million of that set aside to refund Fortnite players harmed by deceptive billing.1Federal Trade Commission. Fortnite Video Game Maker Epic Games to Pay More Than Half a Billion Dollars Over FTC Allegations The FTC pursued the case itself on behalf of consumers rather than a group of plaintiffs filing suit. Refunds started going out in late 2024, and the FTC reopened the claims process in June 2025 for people who missed the first deadline, with a new cutoff of July 9, 2025.2Federal Trade Commission. The FTC’s billing complaint centered on what it called dark patterns: interface designs that pushed players into purchases they never meant to make. Confusing button layouts caused accidental spending while the game loaded or sat in sleep mode, and the checkout flow lacked meaningful confirmation steps, so a single misplaced tap could charge real money. The $245 million refund pool comes from that complaint.1Federal Trade Commission. Fortnite Video Game Maker Epic Games to Pay More Than Half a Billion Dollars Over FTC Allegations

Who Qualifies for a Refund

The refund fund covers three categories of harm, and each has its own eligibility window. Getting the dates right matters, because a claim filed under the wrong category will be denied.3Federal Trade Commission. Fortnite Refunds

  • Parents whose children made credit card charges without permission between January 2017 and November 2018. This covers cases where a child used saved payment information to buy V-Bucks or other items without a parent knowing.
  • Players charged V-Bucks for items they didn’t want between January 2017 and September 2022. These are the dark-pattern cases: skins, llamas, or battle passes bought by accident because of misleading button layouts.
  • Players whose accounts were locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after they disputed charges with their credit card company. Epic routinely froze or banned accounts when players filed chargebacks, cutting them off from games and digital purchases they had already paid for.

The end dates differ. The unauthorized-child-purchase window closed in November 2018, while the other two run through September 2022. Many online summaries lump all three under a single November 2022 cutoff, which is wrong, so check the category that actually fits your situation.3Federal Trade Commission. Fortnite Refunds

How to File a Claim

If the claims window is still open, start at the official portal at fortniterefund.com/File-a-Claim.4Federal Trade Commission. File a Claim – Fortnite Refunds You’ll need either your claim number or your Epic Account ID. Many eligible players got an email from the FTC with a claim number, sometimes labeled a “Remind-O-Gram.” If you didn’t receive that email or can’t find it, use your Epic Account ID instead, which is a string of characters listed in your Fortnite account settings under the Account and Privacy tab.3Federal Trade Commission. The form asks which category of harm applies, your account details, and your preferred payment method. Save the confirmation number the system generates and keep any confirmation email. Those are your proof of filing if a problem comes up later.

The reopened claims deadline is July 9, 2025.2Federal Trade Commission. Payment Methods and Expiration

You choose your payment method when you file: a mailed check or PayPal. Both come with deadlines. Checks must be cashed within 90 days. PayPal payments must be accepted within 30 days.3Federal Trade Commission. Fortnite Refunds

If you miss those windows, the money isn’t necessarily gone forever. The FTC has said that if funds remain in the settlement pool, an expired payment may be reissued. To ask about that, call the phone number on the specific refund program page at ftc.gov/refunds.5Federal Trade Commission. Refund Programs: Frequently Asked Questions Don’t count on reissuance. Cash the check or accept the PayPal payment as soon as it arrives.

How Much You Can Expect

The $245 million pool is fixed. Individual refund amounts depend on the charges tied to your account during the eligibility window, not an equal split among claimants. The more you were overcharged, the larger your refund, but the total is still capped by the fund size. Early reporting put the average payment at roughly $114 per person across the first round of distributions.

Because the fund is finite, a high volume of valid claims can reduce what each person receives if total eligible charges exceed available money. The FTC cross-references claims against Epic’s internal transaction records, so what you get should reflect your actual purchase history rather than a guess.

If Your Claim Is Denied or You Never Get Paid

The FTC does not publish a formal appeals process for denied Fortnite refund claims. If your claim is denied, your account information doesn’t match, or a payment you expected never arrives, call the refund administrator at 1-833-915-0880.3Federal Trade Commission. Fortnite Refunds The administrator can confirm your claim was received, explain a denial, and in some cases request additional documentation.

The FTC also keeps a general FAQ covering uncashed checks, address changes, and how to spot scams pretending to be from the agency.5Federal Trade Commission. Refund Programs: Frequently Asked Questions One rule to hold onto: legitimate communications about this settlement come from the FTC or its contracted administrator. Anyone asking you to pay a fee to “process” your refund is running a scam.

Do You Owe Taxes on the Refund

Refunds for money you were wrongly charged are generally not taxable income. The IRS treats a refund of an overcharge as a return of your own money, not new income. Because the Fortnite settlement compensates players for purchases they didn’t authorize or didn’t intend to make, most recipients shouldn’t owe tax on the payment.

Starting in 2026, the IRS reporting threshold for settlement payments on Form 1099-MISC rises from $600 to $2,000.6Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Publication 1099 With the average Fortnite refund near $114, most claimants sit well below that threshold and won’t receive a 1099 at all. If you do get one, ask a tax professional whether the payment qualifies as a nontaxable refund of a prior expense on your return.
