Epiq Class Action: Payouts, Antitrust Suits, and Data Incidents

Epiq Class Action & Claims Solutions is the largest court-appointed class action settlement administrator in the United States, and if you’ve received a notice or payment about a class action settlement, there’s roughly a coin-flip chance Epiq is the company handling it. The Beaverton, Oregon-based firm has administered 53% of the top 100 U.S. class action settlements of all time, managing more than $35.8 billion in settlement funds according to Institutional Shareholder Services Securities Class Action Services.1Epiq. What Epiq Actually Does in a Settlement

When a court approves a class action settlement, someone has to run the machinery of getting money to the people the case was brought for. That is Epiq’s job, and it happens under court supervision in three stages.

First comes notice. Epiq designs and sends the mailings, runs the email campaigns, builds the dedicated settlement website, and operates the phone lines that tell class members a case exists and what their options are. It also processes opt-out requests from people who don’t want to participate.3Epiq. Claims Administration

Then comes claims processing. Epiq takes in paper and electronic claim forms, validates them, and flags problems. When the work is for the FTC, it also cross-references claims against other federal refund matters to catch potential fraud.2FTC. Epiq Privacy Impact Assessment

Finally, Epiq calculates individual award amounts under the court-approved plan of allocation and pays class members by check, ACH transfer, or through its digital payment platform. The company reports issuing an average of 41 million payments per year.4Epiq. Payments

Are Epiq Settlement Emails Legitimate?

This is the question most people are actually asking when they search for Epiq. Something landed in your inbox saying you have money coming from a class action, and you want to know whether it’s real.

Legitimate payment notifications from Epiq’s digital platform come from the address noreply@epiqpay.com. Messages from rewards@tremendous.com, a payment processing partner Epiq uses, are also authentic. Both types of emails contain a link to a dashboard where you choose how you want to be paid. Snopes investigated notifications tied to the Zoom Video Communications class action settlement and confirmed those emails were real.5Snopes. Zoom Settlement Scam or Legit

The confusion is not your fault. A 2019 FTC report found that email was the least effective method for reaching class members, largely because settlement notices are easy to mistake for spam.6Epiq. Class Action Email Notifications If you want to verify a message before clicking anything, look up the official settlement website for the case named in the email. Epiq builds and maintains those sites as part of its administration duties, and any real payment link will match what’s posted there.

How Epiq Pays Class Members

Epiq’s digital payment product, EpiqPay, lets you choose your payout without downloading an app. Options include Amazon, Mastercard, and PayPal. The system only debits the settlement fund when a recipient actually selects a payment method, which gives the administrator tighter control over the money in the fund.7Epiq. EpiqPay

Traditional paper checks and ACH bank transfers remain available depending on how a particular settlement is structured. The plan of allocation approved by the court governs which options are offered in any given case.

Antitrust Lawsuits Against Epiq

Epiq is currently defending itself against a wave of lawsuits alleging that it and other major settlement administrators colluded with banks to keep interest paid on settlement funds artificially low, pocketing the difference through kickbacks.

The first suits were filed between November 7 and November 20, 2025, naming Epiq alongside JND Legal Administration, Angeion Group, Huntington National Bank, Western Alliance Bank, Blackhawk Network Holdings, and Tremendous.8Law.com. Five More Lawsuits Allege Fraud, Kickbacks in Class Action Settlements On December 12, 2025, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated the cases as In re: Class Action Settlement Administration Litigation, MDL No. 3162, before Judge John D. Bates in the District of Columbia.9U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation. MDL 3162 Transfer Order

The complaints describe two alleged schemes. In the first, administrators are accused of steering settlement deposits to Huntington National Bank and Western Alliance Bank, which together reportedly control over 80% of the settlement deposit market, in exchange for kickbacks routed through special purpose entities. According to the complaints, the banks paid class members interest below 0.5% while market rates ran between 4% and 6%, and a substantial part of the spread flowed back to the administrators.10Westlaw. Hunter v. Epiq Systems Inc. et al. In the second, administrators allegedly received a cut of “breakage,” the revenue from unredeemed digital payment cards, in return for routing payouts through specific digital platforms.9U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation. The plaintiffs bring claims under the Sherman Act, the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), and common law theories including breach of fiduciary duty and unjust enrichment.10Westlaw. Hunter v. Epiq Systems Inc. et al. A related complaint filed February 27, 2026, said the four largest administrators, including Epiq with an estimated 50% market share, together with five other firms, control well over 65% of the U.S. class action administration market.11CCH Business. Coughlan v. Angeion Group LLC The litigation is in its early stages, and the allegations have not been proven.

Data Security Incidents

Because Epiq holds personal information for millions of class members, its cybersecurity record matters to consumers. The company has publicly disclosed two ransomware incidents.

On February 29, 2020, Epiq discovered a ransomware attack that hit computers across its 80 global offices and forced the company to take systems offline worldwide, including instances of its Relativity eDiscovery software. Epiq brought in a forensic firm, notified federal law enforcement, and had its website back online by March 3, 2020. The company said at the time there was no evidence of unauthorized data transfer.12ComplexDiscovery. An Epiq Ransomware Attack Hits Legal Services Industry Leader

Some of the Settlements Epiq Has Run

The scale of Epiq’s work helps explain why the company’s name shows up so often in class action mail. It has held the No. 1 ranking among claims administrators in the ISS SCAS top 100 U.S. class action settlements report for seven consecutive years, a streak confirmed in March 2025.1Epiq. What to Do If You’ve Been Contacted

If you’ve received an Epiq notification, the practical steps are short. Check the sender address against the legitimate ones above. Look up the settlement’s official website independently rather than clicking through the email. Confirm the case name matches something you were plausibly part of. If everything lines up, the notice is almost certainly real, and choosing a payment method promptly is how you get paid. If anything looks off, the case name doesn’t ring a bell, or the sender doesn’t match, treat it as suspicious and verify through the court docket or the law firm listed as class counsel before acting.
