Eva Benefield’s Dad: The Killing, Trial, and Sentencing

Eva Benefield’s dad was Douglas Glass Benefield, a retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander and Charleston businessman who was shot and killed by his estranged wife, Ashley Benefield, on September 27, 2020. He was 58. Ashley was later convicted of manslaughter with a firearm and sentenced to twenty years in prison. For Eva, then nineteen, the killing came five years after she had already lost her mother, and it made her the public face of the case the media called the “Black Swan” trial.

Who Doug Benefield Was

The Marriage to Ashley

Nine months after Renee’s death, Doug met Ashley Byers at a political dinner in Florida in August 2016. They married thirteen days later at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Charleston.5Vanity Fair. Relations soured. Eva testified that Ashley began stepping into a motherly role soon after Renee’s death and would report her to Doug for “not obeying” over what Eva considered minor issues.7E! The Day Doug Was Killed

On September 27, 2020, Doug and Ashley were packing at Ashley’s mother’s home in Florida, preparing to move to Maryland so they could live separately while sharing custody of Emerson. Ashley told a neighbor, and later a jury, that Doug had become agitated, struck her, and lunged at her, and that she fired because she feared for her life.9CBS News. How Eva Kept the Case Public

While the case worked through the courts, Eva turned to TikTok. The Trial and Verdict

Ashley Benefield’s trial took place in Bradenton, Florida, in the summer of 2024 before a jury of five women and one man. Assistant State Attorney Suzanne O’Donnell led the prosecution, arguing that Ashley killed Doug to gain sole custody of Emerson. The state pointed to the absence of visible injuries on Ashley after the shooting, a neighbor’s testimony that he saw no marks, and medical examiner testimony that the bullet trajectory suggested Doug was turning away rather than lunging.9CBS News. Eva testified for the state. On July 30, 2024, after roughly seven hours of deliberation, the jury acquitted Ashley of second-degree murder and convicted her of manslaughter with a firearm.14Sarasota Herald-Tribune. Sentencing and Eva’s Statement in Court

On December 3, 2024, Judge Matthew Whyte sentenced Ashley Benefield to twenty years in prison followed by ten years of probation.9CBS News. Outside the courthouse, Eva told reporters, “My dad was the best man that I have ever known in my entire life. Where Things Stand Now

Ashley’s attorneys filed an appeal in October 2024 seeking a new trial, centered on alleged juror misconduct. The defense claims one juror brought an unauthorized flip phone into deliberations and communicated with people outside the courtroom, an allegation traced to anonymous online comments from someone claiming to be the juror’s brother.17WFLA. Eva, now twenty-three, has said she hopes to build a relationship one day with her half-sister Emerson, who has been raised by Ashley’s mother since the shooting. “I hope one day me and Emerson will be able to have a relationship where she can come to me with any questions,” Eva has said.6ABC News.
