Fairfax County’s personal property tax on vehicles is $4.57 per $100 of assessed value, billed once a year and due October 5 for cars already on file with the county. The tax applies to vehicles normally garaged or parked in the county, and several relief programs can lower or eliminate what you owe.
What the Tax Covers
Fairfax County taxes tangible personal property that is normally kept in the county, which for most residents means motor vehicles: cars, trucks, motorcycles, motor homes, trailers, buses, and mobile homes.1Fairfax County, Virginia. Vehicle Taxes and Fees Which locality bills you depends on where the vehicle is physically kept. Virginia law assigns tax “situs” to the county, city, or town where a vehicle is normally garaged, docked, or parked; if it isn’t regularly kept anywhere in Virginia, situs defaults to the owner’s domicile.2Virginia Code Commission. How Your Vehicle Is Valued
For most cars and light trucks, the county uses the January edition of the J.D. Power Valuation Services Used Car Guide and pulls the “clean trade-in” value for your year, make, and model.4Fairfax County, Virginia. Vehicle Assessment Methods That value reflects what a dealer would reasonably pay for a vehicle in good condition with no major mechanical problems.
Property that isn’t in the pricing guide, such as boats, trailers, motor homes, heavy-duty trucks, and aircraft, is valued as a percentage of original cost, sliding from 60 percent down to 20 percent depending on age.4Fairfax County, Virginia. Vehicle Assessment Methods Your bill equals the assessed value divided by 100, then multiplied by $4.57. A vehicle assessed at $15,000 generates a base tax of $685.50 before any relief credits.

Seniors and People With Disabilities
Fairfax County offers a local vehicle tax relief program for residents who are at least 65 or permanently and totally disabled as of January 1, limited to one vehicle owned and primarily used by the applicant. Combined gross income of the owner and spouse for the prior year cannot exceed $22,000, or $29,500 if the applicant is permanently and totally disabled. Combined net assets of applicant and spouse must be $75,000 or less as of December 31 of the prior year.16Fairfax County, Virginia. Disabled Veterans
Veterans rated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs with a 100 percent service-connected, permanent, and total disability are exempt from personal property tax on one vehicle. The vehicle must be a passenger car or pickup/panel truck registered for personal use, and it may be owned by either spouse if the veteran is married. The exemption expires on the veteran’s death and does not transfer to a surviving spouse.17Virginia Department of Veterans Services. Appealing Your Assessment
If your vehicle has body damage, rust, or significantly higher mileage than the pricing guide assumes, you can request a value adjustment. Appeals must be postmarked by May 1 and require a Vehicle Tax Appeal Form with supporting documentation such as a recent state safety inspection receipt or service record showing the odometer reading.20Fairfax County, Virginia. Appealing Your Vehicle Assessment
Filing an appeal does not pause your obligation to pay. You still owe by the regular due date, and penalties and interest accrue if you skip the payment while waiting. If the county lowers your assessment after you’ve paid, it refunds the difference.20Fairfax County, Virginia. Appealing Your Vehicle Assessment
Selling, Moving, or Disposing of a Vehicle
When you sell a vehicle, move it out of Fairfax County, or otherwise dispose of it, notify the Department of Tax Administration through the online Vehicle Update Tool, by email, by phone, or in person.
