How Your Assessment Is Set

The Department of Tax Administration assesses every property at its estimated fair market value as of January 1 each year.10Fairfax County, Virginia. Real Estate Assessments and Taxes Appraisers work from recent sales of comparable homes in your neighborhood, adjusting for differences in size, condition, and features. Additions, finished basements, and renovated kitchens can push the number up. Assessment notices arrive early in the year, well before tax bills, giving you time to review and, if needed, appeal.

The rate and the assessment are set independently. A higher assessment doesn’t automatically mean a higher bill if the Board lowers the rate, and vice versa. Your actual bill is the combination.

Payment Deadlines

Real estate taxes come in two installments, due July 28 and December 5. Vehicle personal property taxes are due in a single payment by October 5.3Fairfax County, Virginia. Tax Due Dates and Deadlines If any deadline falls on a weekend or county holiday, it shifts to the next business day.

To have your payment applied correctly, keep your Parcel ID or Map Reference Number for real estate handy, along with your property account number and Vehicle Identification Number for vehicles. All appear on your tax bill and can be looked up through the county’s online records.

How to Pay

The Department of Tax Administration accepts payments through several channels.11Fairfax County. Department of Tax Administration

  • Online through the MyFairfax portal. Electronic check is free; credit or debit cards carry a 2.5% service fee from the payment processor.
  • By phone using the automated payment line for credit or debit cards, with the same 2.5% fee.
  • By mail, sending a check or money order to the address on your bill. The postmark date counts as the payment date.
  • In person at the Fairfax County Government Center during business hours.

The card fee adds up. On a $4,000 real estate installment, 2.5% is another $100. Electronic check avoids it entirely.

Late Payment Penalties and Interest

Miss a deadline and the county adds an automatic 10% penalty on the unpaid amount for both real estate and vehicle taxes. From there, the two diverge.12Fairfax County, Virginia. I’ve Missed a Due Date. Now What?

  • Real estate: interest accrues at 1% per year on the unpaid balance. Because payment is split into two installments, each late installment gets its own penalty.
  • Vehicles and business property: interest runs at 5% per year, and if the tax stays unpaid more than 45 days past the due date, the penalty jumps from 10% to 25%.

The vehicle escalation is where late payers get stung. A bill two months overdue costs far more than one two weeks overdue.

Beyond penalties and interest, the county can pursue wage liens, bank liens, vehicle booting and towing, and public auction of real estate or vehicles.12Fairfax County, Virginia.
