Family Files Lawsuit Against Roblox: Federal Case and AG Settlements

More than 160 families have sued Roblox Corporation in a consolidated federal case alleging the gaming platform’s design allowed adult predators to contact, groom, and sexually exploit children, and at least seven state attorneys general have brought their own enforcement actions. The Roblox child safety lawsuits have produced roughly $35.8 million in state settlements so far, but no trial dates or global resolution for the family claims, which remain centralized before a federal judge in California.

What Families Are Alleging

The complaints come from different states and different children, but they describe the same pattern. An adult creates a Roblox account posing as a child. They contact a young user, often under 13, through in-game chat. Over days or weeks they build trust, sometimes using Robux, the platform’s virtual currency, as a bribe. Then they push the conversation onto Discord, Snapchat, or another app, where they coerce the child into sending sexually explicit images or arrange to meet in person.

Across the litigation, plaintiffs point to the same platform failures:

  • No meaningful age verification at sign-up, letting adults register as children.
  • Chat features that allowed adults to message children directly, with text filters plaintiffs say were easily circumvented.
  • Parental controls that were not turned on by default and were hard for parents to find.
  • Sexually themed user-created “experiences” — games with simulated sexual acts and nudity — accessible to young children.

Discord is named as a co-defendant in several cases, on the theory that grooming that began on Roblox escalated on Discord.

The Consolidated Federal Case

In December 2025, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation ordered federal Roblox child exploitation cases centralized as In re: Roblox Corporation Child Sexual Exploitation and Assault Litigation, MDL No. 3166, before Chief Judge Richard Seeborg in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, where Roblox is headquartered.2Ethenos Troff Law. As of early June 2026, 162 lawsuits were pending in the MDL.3ConsumerNotice.org. Roblox Lawsuit A case management conference was held in April 2026, and Judge Seeborg has indicated he plans to appoint a settlement master to mediate. No trial dates have been scheduled, and no settlements have been reached in the individual family claims.

The Arbitration Fight

Roblox has tried to move individual cases out of court and into private arbitration, citing the arbitration clause in its Terms of Service. Plaintiffs have pushed back, arguing that minors cannot legally consent to such clauses and that forcing child sexual abuse claims into confidential arbitration is unconscionable.

In November 2025, a California Superior Court judge denied Roblox’s motion to compel arbitration in one case, citing the Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act, a 2022 federal law that bars enforcement of arbitration agreements in sexual assault and harassment disputes. Roblox appealed. In February 2026, 800 parents sent the Roblox board a letter demanding the company stop trying to push these cases into arbitration, calling the effort “improper and shameful.”4ABC News. How Plaintiffs Are Getting Around Section 230

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act generally shields online platforms from liability for what their users post. Plaintiffs’ attorneys have written around that shield by framing Roblox as a defective product rather than a publisher of user content.

Drawing on the Ninth Circuit’s 2021 decision in Lemmon v. Snap, Inc., they argue that specific design features — algorithmic friend recommendations, anonymous avatars, the Robux payment system — created foreseeable dangers to children and were engineered choices, not neutral hosting.5Game Developer. Plaintiffs’ teams say forensic audits of the platform’s algorithms and internal Roblox documents about growth-versus-safety trade-offs show the design choices were deliberate.

State Attorney General Actions and Settlements

Alongside the family MDL, state attorneys general have opened their own fronts, mostly under state consumer protection laws. These state actions have produced the only financial settlements so far.

Settlements With Three States

In April 2026, Roblox settled with three states for a combined total of roughly $35.8 million:

As part of these agreements, Roblox agreed to verify all users’ ages, limit adults’ ability to contact users under 16, and restrict unencrypted communications involving minors so law enforcement can access them in exploitation investigations.6Alabama Attorney General. Actions Still Pending

Texas filed suit in November 2025 under the Deceptive Trade Practices Act, alleging Roblox falsely claimed to be the “world’s safest” platform for children.9Texas Attorney General. State of Texas v. Florida is running a criminal track. Attorney General James Uthmeier issued criminal subpoenas to Roblox in October 2025, escalating a civil investigation started that April. His office said investigations into more than 1,000 child predators arrested in Florida in 2025 had “frequently led back to Roblox.”12Florida Phoenix. Los Angeles County sued in February 2026 under California’s Unfair Competition Law and False Advertising Law, seeking injunctive relief and civil penalties of up to $2,500 per day per violation.13Los Angeles County. Safety Changes Roblox Has Made

Roblox has said it is “deeply troubled” by these incidents and has rolled out a series of changes, though plaintiffs argue the changes came late and remain porous.

In January 2026, Roblox began requiring facial age estimation, run by third-party vendor Persona, for anyone wanting access to chat. The system uses a short video scan to estimate age and then limits chat to users in roughly the same age bracket. Users 13 and over can verify with a government-issued ID instead.14MediaPost. Roblox Enforces Global Age Checks for Chat Access Accuracy has been a problem. Wired reported the AI often misidentifies ages, with adults flagged as minors and 10-year-olds classed as 21 and up. Reporters also found age-verified accounts being sold on eBay for as little as $4, and users bypassing checks with celebrity photos or drawn-on wrinkles.15WIRED. Roblox has also introduced age-based account tiers: Roblox Kids for ages five through eight and Roblox Select for ages nine through 15. The Kids tier restricts users to games rated “Minimal” or “Mild” and disables chat by default; the Select tier allows some chat with parent-adjustable settings.16Roblox. The Scale of the Problem

Reports of child exploitation on Roblox submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children rose from 675 in 2019 to 24,522 in 2024.2Ethenos Troff Law. Roblox Sexual Assault Lawsuits Roblox reported more than 151 million daily active users and 380 million monthly users as of late 2025. According to figures cited in the Los Angeles County complaint, over 40 percent of users are under 13, and nearly 75 percent of American children ages nine through 12 play Roblox regularly.13Los Angeles County. What to Watch Next

Two things will shape the next phase of the family litigation. The first is the California appellate ruling on Roblox’s push to compel arbitration; if Roblox loses, the bulk of the family claims stay in open federal court under Judge Seeborg. The second is the settlement master Judge Seeborg has signaled he intends to appoint, whose mediation could set the framework for resolving the 162 pending cases. Additional state attorneys general could file new suits, and the most-favored-nation clause in Alabama’s settlement means any richer future state deal would lift Alabama’s recovery too. Whether the safety reforms Roblox has agreed to actually work at a platform used by hundreds of millions of children is the question no court will answer directly.
