Mississippi’s fast track title service delivers a vehicle title within 72 business hours of the Department of Revenue receiving a complete application, for a flat $30 surcharge on top of the normal titling fees.1Mississippi Department of Revenue. What the 72-Hour Clock Actually Measures
The statute gives the Department of Revenue 72 hours to finish processing once it has your complete application and payment, and weekends and state holidays don’t count against that time.3Justia Law. Mississippi Code Title 63 Chapter 21 Article 1 Section 63-21-15 – Application for Certificate of Title Two things sit outside the window: the time your paperwork spends in the mail on the way to Jackson, and the time the finished title spends in the mail on its way back to you or your lienholder.1Mississippi Department of Revenue. Fast Track Title Procedure
“Complete” is the word that trips people up. A missing signature, a transposed VIN digit, or an absent supporting document means the application isn’t complete, and until it is, the 72-hour guarantee doesn’t apply. Getting the paperwork right the first time is what the $30 is really buying you.
Fees
The fast track surcharge is a flat $30 added to the regular fees for your transaction.3Justia Law. Mississippi Code Title 63 Chapter 21 Article 1 Section 63-21-15 – Application for Certificate of Title What you owe depends on the type of title work:
- Original title from a new purchase or a transfer: the standard title fee plus $30. Privilege tax, ad valorem taxes, registration fees, and possibly sales or use tax also apply when you register the vehicle.2Mississippi Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Frequently Asked Questions
- Fast track replacement title: $39 total, which is the $9 replacement fee plus the $30 expedited fee, submitted on Form 78-026.2Mississippi Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Frequently Asked Questions
Forms and Documents
Original Titles and Transfers
The core form is the Application for Certificate of Title, Form 78-002, available at any county tax collector’s office or from the Department of Revenue’s website.4Legal Information Institute. 35 Mississippi Code R 7-05-10-100 – Application for Certificate of Title It asks for the year, make, model, body type, VIN, and odometer reading.3Justia Law. Mississippi Code Title 63 Chapter 21 Article 1 Section 63-21-15 – Application for Certificate of Title When two buyers appear on the bill of sale or manufacturer’s statement of origin, both names must appear on the application and both must sign. If a bank or finance company holds a lien, include the lienholder’s name and mailing address so the title reflects it.
Replacement Titles
For a lost, stolen, or damaged title processed on the fast track, use the Application for Fast Track Replacement Certificate of Title, Form 78-026, rather than the standard replacement form.2Mississippi Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Frequently Asked Questions Apply for a replacement only if you are certain the vehicle already has a Mississippi title on file.5Mississippi Department of Revenue. Application for Replacement Certificate of Title The standard-speed replacement, without the 72-hour guarantee, uses Form 78-006 and costs $9.6Mississippi Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicle Titles
Power of Attorney
If someone else will sign for you, they use the Power of Attorney to Transfer Motor Vehicle, Form 78-003. The owner signs it in front of a notary public, and it must list the vehicle’s make, VIN, year, body type, title number, and odometer reading.7Mississippi Department of Revenue. Power of Attorney to Transfer Motor Vehicle Form 78-003 The completed form travels with the title and attaches to the application as a supporting document.

Mail time doesn’t count toward the 72 hours. The clock starts when the Department physically receives a complete package, so mailing from a distant county can easily add three to five days on the front end.1Mississippi Department of Revenue. Fast Track Title Procedure
Through Your County Tax Collector
You can hand your application to your county tax collector, who reviews the documents before forwarding them to the central office. This works well if you’re paying registration and taxes at the same time, but the transit time between county and state offices is added before the 72-hour clock begins.
Which Vehicles Qualify
Fast track processing covers motor vehicles and manufactured or mobile homes titled through the Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicle Services Bureau.3Justia Law. Mississippi Code Title 63 Chapter 21 Article 1 Section 63-21-15 – Application for Certificate of Title Mississippi treats mobile and manufactured homes as personal property, so they go through the same titling system as cars and trucks.9Mississippi Department of Revenue. Mobile/Manufactured Homes Modular homes are classified as real property and aren’t titled through this bureau.
Boats are handled by the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, not the Department of Revenue, so they aren’t eligible.10Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. Boat Registration and Renewal ATVs have historically fallen outside the Department of Revenue’s titling system, though 2025 legislation (SB 2803) brought ATVs and utility task vehicles under the same title law for units manufactured or first sold after July 1, 2025.11Mississippi Legislature. Senate Bill 2803 – 2025 Regular Session If you own a newer ATV, check with your county tax collector to confirm whether fast track processing applies.
Vehicles with salvage brands or those outside Mississippi’s mandatory titling requirements may need extra documentation that doesn’t fit inside the 72-hour window. Fast track doesn’t waive any paperwork; it only speeds processing once a complete application arrives.
Transfers From a Deceased Owner
Transferring a title when the previous owner has died involves extra paperwork that the fast track fee doesn’t eliminate. If the deceased left a will naming you as the recipient, bring a court-validated copy of the will and the title application to your county tax collector. When the title was jointly held, the surviving co-owner signs the transfer documents and provides the validated will.
If the owner died without a will, the heir completes an Affidavit for Owner Dies Without a Will, Form 78-014, and files it with the county tax collector. The Department of Revenue’s fast track page doesn’t specifically address whether the 72-hour guarantee applies to these transfers, so build in extra time even after paying the expedited fee. Resolving the probate paperwork before you file will keep the application from being kicked back.
