If your certificate has already expired, you have up to one year from that date to renew, though renewals filed more than 90 days past expiration carry a $25 late penalty. Miss the one-year window and the certificate is permanently voided.
When the Renewal Window Opens
The system will not accept a renewal until 60 calendar days before your expiration date. The FDNY sends a reminder by email or mail about 90 days out, but that notice is a heads-up, not a green light.1UpCodes. Missing the printed date does not immediately lock you out. The NYC Fire Code gives you a full year after expiration to submit a renewal.2NYC Business. Past One Year, the Certificate Is Dead
Once a certificate has been expired for more than a year, it cannot be renewed. The Fire Commissioner is prohibited from processing the application.1UpCodes. Between exam prep, scheduling, and processing, that can leave you out of your role for weeks.
Fees and How to Pay

Online payments by credit card carry a 2.49% convenience fee; debit cards work through the same portal. New York City agency employees qualify for a fee exemption. Simplified vs. Comprehensive Online Renewal
The FDNY offers two online paths, and picking the right one saves time.
- Simplified renewal works if your certificate is not fee-exempt and none of your personal information has changed. You can complete it through the FDNY portal without an NYC ID account.
- Comprehensive renewal is required for fee-exempt applicants, or anyone who needs to update a name, address, or employer. It runs through NYC.gov and needs an NYC ID login.

Renewing by Mail
Send the completed renewal form, a check or money order for the fee, and any required employer letter to the FDNY Bureau of Fire Prevention at 9 MetroTech Center, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Put everything in one envelope and keep a copy of what you sent along with tracking information. Approved mail renewals come back as a new physical certificate by standard mail. Processing times are not published, so do not drop your envelope the week before expiration.
What You’ll Need to Submit
Every renewal application requires your current Certificate of Fitness number and a valid email address. The FDNY may also require you to be photographed or to submit two passport-size photos to update your ID card, and ignoring a photography notice is grounds for denial.5American Legal Publishing Corporation. Some certificate types require an employer recommendation letter. When yours does, the letter must be typed, printed on company letterhead, and signed by hand, with the employer’s printed name and title beneath the signature. Working With an Expired Certificate
The NYC Fire Code makes performing any duty that requires a Certificate of Fitness after expiration unlawful.1UpCodes. New York City Fire Code – Certificates of Fitness and Qualification The exposure runs both ways. Employers who allow it can be cited too. FDNY inspectors check for valid certificates during routine inspections, and violations for expired or missing certificates commonly result in fines of $1,000 or more, plus a mark on the building’s record that can complicate permit renewals and insurance for the property owner.
The department can also deny renewal, suspend, or revoke a certificate for misconduct, including false statements on an application.5American Legal Publishing Corporation.
