When Your License Expires
Barber licenses in Florida run on a two-year cycle under Chapter 476 of the Florida Statutes.1Florida Senate. Florida Code 476.154 – Biennial Renewal of Licenses Barbers and barber assistants renew on even years, with the next deadline falling on July 31, 2026. Restricted barbers use the same biennial pattern but renew in odd years. Your exact expiration date is printed on the license itself and shown in your DBPR account.
The renewal window opens roughly 90 days before the deadline, so you can submit anywhere from about May through July 31. Don’t push it to the final days. The portal slows down as the deadline approaches, and a mailed application needs time to arrive.
The HIV/AIDS Continuing Education Requirement
Before DBPR will process your renewal, you have to complete a two-hour HIV/AIDS course through a provider approved by the Barbers’ Board. It’s the only continuing education requirement for barbers, and it covers transmission prevention and sanitation practices tied to the routine skin contact and minor cuts of barbershop work.
Approved providers usually transmit your completion to DBPR electronically, and the hours should show up in your account within a few days. Log in and confirm before you submit anything. If the credit isn’t there, contact the provider directly, because the department will not push an incomplete renewal through.

DBPR Online Services Sign in with the credentials from your original license application or a previous renewal, open the renewal link tied to your barber license, verify your personal information and CE completion, then pay by credit card or electronic check. A confirmation email arrives immediately, and the online registry usually reflects your updated status within a few business days.
By Mail
You can also download the paper renewal application from the DBPR site and mail it with payment to the department’s processing center. Fill in every field, including CE certification. Incomplete applications get returned, and a returned application can easily push you past July 31. Mail processing is slower, so build in time, and expect your physical license card to arrive separately after approval.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline

The bigger risk is what happens if a delinquent license sits through a full additional cycle. Under Florida law, a delinquent license that is not renewed to active or inactive status before the end of the current licensing cycle becomes void automatically, with no further action by the board.5The Florida Legislature. Miss July 31, 2026 and then also miss the 2028 cycle, and the license is gone.
While your license is expired or delinquent, working as a barber is a second-degree misdemeanor, and the board can add administrative penalties up to $500 per violation on top of any criminal charge.6The Florida Legislature. Inactive Status and Reactivation

Reactivating from inactive to active takes a change-of-status application (DBPR BAR 9) and $170 on time, or $212.50 if the inactive license has gone delinquent.8Florida Senate. Even when you’re not practicing, an inactive license must still be renewed every two years or it can lapse permanently.
Military Fee Waivers
If you’re a U.S. Armed Forces member on active duty, Florida keeps your license in good standing automatically. You don’t have to register, pay, or take any renewal action while serving or for two years after discharge. If you practice barbering in the private sector during active duty or that two-year window, you complete the normal renewal steps, but the fee is waived.9The Florida Legislature. Spouses of active-duty members are also kept in good standing and are exempt from renewal steps when absent from Florida because of the service member’s duties. Florida National Guard and U.S. Armed Forces Reserve members get a different protection. Your license cannot expire while you’re on federal active duty, and you have 90 days after returning to renew at the normal fee with no late charges. Present a copy of your orders or written verification from your commanding officer before that window closes.
Your Shop License Is Separate
Owning or operating a barbershop means holding a second license for the shop itself, renewed on the same biennial pattern. The barbershop renewal fee is $105.10Florida Administrative Code. Renewing your personal barber license does not renew the shop, and vice versa.
