Florida CDL Renewal: Costs, Medical Certificate, and Steps

A Florida CDL renewal costs $75, can be done up to 12 months before your expiration date, and runs through either the FLHSMV’s MyDMV Portal online or an in-person visit to a driver license service center. A standard CDL lasts eight years; a HazMat endorsement shortens that to four. Before your renewal will process, two items must be current in the state’s system: your Medical Examiner’s Certificate and your self-certification category.

When You Can Renew and How Long the License Lasts

A standard Florida CDL expires eight years after your last birthday before the license was issued or renewed.1The Florida Legislature. Florida Code 322.18 – Renewal; Expiration of Licenses Two situations change that:

FLHSMV mails a renewal notice to your address on file at least 30 days before your birthday. You can start the renewal up to 12 months in advance, which is useful if you need to coordinate a medical exam or schedule around work.

Medical Certificate and Self-Certification Must Be Current

Two items sit in front of every Florida CDL renewal, and they trip up more drivers than the paperwork or the fee.

Medical Examiner’s Certificate

Interstate CDL holders must be examined by a provider on the FMCSA’s National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.4Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. If your medical card lapses and you don’t file a new one, FLHSMV can disqualify your commercial driving privilege even though the license itself hasn’t expired.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. CDL Medical Information

Self-Certification Category

Every CDL holder must declare one of four categories describing the type of driving they do and whether they need a medical card:6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. CDL Medical Information

  • Non-excepted interstate (Category A): you drive across state lines and must keep a federal medical card current.
  • Excepted interstate (Category B): you drive across state lines but qualify for an exception from federal medical certification.
  • Non-excepted intrastate (Category C): you drive only within Florida and must keep a state medical card current.
  • Excepted intrastate (Category D): you drive only within Florida and qualify for an exception from state medical certification.

Category A and C drivers must have a valid medical card on file at all times. If the nature of your operation has changed since your last renewal, update your category before you renew, not after.

Renewing Online Through MyDMV Portal

Florida offers online CDL renewal through the MyDMV Portal for eligible drivers.7Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. MyDMV Portal Create an account and let the system verify your identity against FLHSMV’s records. If it can’t verify you, or if you need to upgrade to a REAL ID-compliant license, the portal will send you to a service center. Online works best when your documents are already on file and your name and address haven’t changed.

Renewing at a Service Center

An in-person renewal includes a vision screening. Florida law requires both an eyesight test and a hearing test for CDL applicants, given either by a department examiner or a licensed physician.8The Florida Legislature. Documents to Bring

If you already hold a REAL ID-compliant CDL and nothing about your name or address has changed, you won’t need to re-present identity documents.9Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What to Bring Otherwise, bring the full REAL ID set:

Renewing a HazMat Endorsement

HazMat renewals require a TSA threat assessment on top of everything else. TSA recommends starting the process at least 60 days before you need the determination, because processing can exceed 45 days in busy periods.11Transportation Security Administration. HAZMAT Endorsement

The TSA fee is $85.25, reduced to $41 if you hold a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).12TSA Enrollment by IDEMIA. If Your CDL Has Already Expired

Penalties escalate quickly:

An expired CDL also makes you uninsurable behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle, and your employer can’t legally put you on the road. The 12-month advance window exists to keep this from happening.

Offenses That Can Block a Renewal

You can’t renew a CDL that’s under active disqualification. Florida treats certain offenses as “serious traffic violations” for CDL purposes, including speeding 15 mph or more over the limit, reckless driving, improper lane changes, following too closely, texting while driving, and using a handheld phone while driving. Two such violations within three years bring a 60-day disqualification; three within three years bring 120 days. These apply even if the violations happened in a personal vehicle, as long as the convictions result in a suspension, revocation, or cancellation of your driving privilege.16The Florida Legislature. Major offenses hit harder. A DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, or committing a felony involving a motor vehicle while operating a commercial vehicle results in at least a one-year disqualification for a first offense. If the vehicle was carrying hazardous materials at the time, the minimum jumps to three years. A second major offense triggers a lifetime disqualification.16The Florida Legislature.
