The Florida gas tax by county ranges from about 56.3 cents to 62.3 cents per gallon in 2026, once you add the federal excise tax to Florida’s state taxes and whatever local option fuel taxes your county has chosen to impose.1Office of Economic and Demographic Research. 2026 Federal, State, and County Tax Rates on Motor Fuel and Diesel Fuel The federal and state pieces are identical everywhere in Florida. The six-cent spread between the cheapest and most expensive counties comes entirely from decisions made by county commissioners about optional local levies.

What Every Florida Driver Pays
Before any county tax enters the picture, every gallon of gasoline sold in Florida carries the same base of federal and state taxes.
The federal excise tax is 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents on diesel, a rate that has been frozen since 1993 and is not indexed to inflation.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 510, Excise Taxes
Florida adds a 22-cent state motor fuel tax, a 9.9-cent State Comprehensive Enhanced Transportation System (SCETS) tax, and a 0.125-cent inspection fee for 2026. Those state rates adjust each January based on changes in the National Consumer Price Index, as required by Chapter 206 of the Florida Statutes.3Florida Department of Revenue. Fuel Tax Rates Adjusted Beginning January 1, 20264Justia. 2025 Florida Statutes Title XIV Chapter 206 Motor and Other Fuel Taxes
Add those together and the fixed floor for any Florida driver is roughly 50.4 cents per gallon. Everything above that is local.
Why the Counties Differ
Florida law lets counties stack up to three separate local fuel taxes on top of the statewide base. Each has its own cap and its own approval process, and adoption is uneven across the state.5The 2025 Florida Statutes. Florida Statutes Title XXVI Chapter 336 Section 336.025
The ninth-cent fuel tax lets a county add up to 1 cent per gallon.6The 2025 Florida Statutes. Florida Statutes Title XIV Chapter 206 Section 206.41 Most counties have adopted this penny on gasoline. A handful, including Brevard, Franklin, and Hamilton, have not.
The 1-to-6-cent local option fuel tax can be enacted by a simple majority of the county commission or by referendum. Every Florida county has maxed this one out at the full 6 cents on both gasoline and diesel, so it does not create any county-to-county variation.
The additional 1-to-5-cent local option fuel tax is the real source of the spread. It applies only to gasoline, not diesel, and enacting it by ordinance requires a supermajority of the county commission (or a referendum). Some counties levy the full 5 cents, some levy nothing, and a few land in between. Whether your county sits at 56.3 or 62.3 cents comes down almost entirely to what it has done with this layer.
Diesel Is the Same Everywhere
If you buy diesel rather than gasoline, the county lookup above does not apply to you. Diesel is taxed at a uniform 63.3 cents per gallon in every Florida county. The additional 1-to-5-cent local option tax simply does not exist for diesel, and the ninth-cent tax on diesel is collected in every county through a statewide equalization provision.1Office of Economic and Demographic Research. 2026 Federal, State, and County Tax Rates on Motor Fuel and Diesel Fuel
Checking the Rate in Future Years
Because Florida’s state components reindex to inflation every January, the total per-gallon figure shifts a little each year even when your county makes no changes. The Florida Department of Revenue publishes an annual Tax Information Publication with the updated state rates and a chart showing every county’s combined state and local taxes.7Florida Dept. of Revenue. Fuel Tax The Office of Economic and Demographic Research publishes a companion one-page table that adds the federal excise tax and gives a single per-gallon total for all 67 counties.1Office of Economic and Demographic Research. 2026 Federal, State, and County Tax Rates on Motor Fuel and Diesel Fuel To reproduce the calculation on your own, take the DOR’s combined state-and-county figure for your county and add the 18.4-cent federal excise tax.
