A Florida license change of address must be completed within 30 calendar days of moving. The fastest route is the DHSMV’s MyDMV Portal, where you can update your record in a few minutes using your license number and date of birth. Updating the database is free; ordering a new physical card that shows the new address costs $25, plus a $2 online convenience fee or up to $6.25 at a tax collector’s office. Miss the 30-day window and you’ve committed a nonmoving traffic violation carrying a $30 fine.
The 30-Day Rule
Florida Statute 322.19 requires you to “obtain a replacement license or card that reflects the change” within 30 days of moving.1The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 322.19 – Change of Address, Name, or Citizenship Status In practice, the DHSMV treats completing the address change through its portal or at a local office as satisfying the requirement, even if you don’t order a new physical card.
Skip the deadline and you’re looking at a $30 nonmoving violation under Florida Statute 318.18.2The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 318.18 – Amount of Penalties No points on your record, but no reason to pay it either.

How to Update Your Address
Online
The DHSMV directs address changes to the MyDMV Portal.4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. In Person
Any Florida Driver License Office or a County Tax Collector’s office that handles licensing services can process the change. Bring your two proof-of-address documents (see below) so staff can verify them. By Mail
The statute allows a written request that includes your old address, new address, and license number.3Florida Senate. Florida Statutes 322.19 – Change of Address, Name, or Citizenship Status In practice, this route is reserved mostly for active-duty military and their dependents stationed out of state. Processing takes longer than the online or in-person options, so start early.
When Online Isn’t an Option
If you originally established your identity using certain document types referenced under Florida Statute 322.08, you can’t change your address online or by mail. Documents That Prove Your New Address
For an in-person update, the DHSMV requires two documents from different sources showing your new Florida residential address and your name. Printouts and faxes are acceptable.7Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. U.S. Citizen
- A current residential lease, deed, mortgage document, or monthly mortgage statement.
- A water, gas, electric, cell phone, or cable bill dated within the last 60 days.
- Homeowner’s or automobile insurance policy or bill dated within the last 60 days.
- A bank, credit card, or investment account statement dated within the last 60 days.
- A Florida vehicle registration or title.
- A Florida voter registration card.
The 60-day freshness rule on bills and statements is the most common tripping point. A bank statement from three months ago is rejected even if the address on it is correct.7Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. U.S. Citizen
If Nothing Is in Your Name
If you live with a spouse, partner, or family member and can’t produce two address documents in your own name, the person whose name is on the documents can sign a Certification of Address affidavit (HSMV Form 71120). They provide one household document like a deed or lease in their name, one supporting document such as a utility bill, and the signed affidavit confirming you live there.8Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees and Whether to Order a New Card
Updating the state’s electronic record and ordering a new plastic card are two different things. The record changes for free the moment you complete the transaction, and your confirmation receipt is the temporary paperwork. A new physical card is optional and costs money.

Skip the replacement and your existing card stays physically valid, but its printed address won’t match what the state has on file. An officer running your license during a stop sees the updated address regardless. Keeping the confirmation receipt with your old card covers the gap.
Update Your Vehicle Registration Separately
The DHSMV is explicit that your license and your vehicle title and registration both need to be updated within the same 30-day window.4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Name and Address Changes This is the step most people forget.
When you change your license address, the new address flows through automatically to an electronic title. A printed title still shows the old address until you apply for a new one using HSMV Form 82040. Your registration is a separate update; submit HSMV Form 82101 to get a new registration certificate.4Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. What Changes Automatically, and What Doesn’t
Under federal law, a driver license address change automatically updates your voter registration for federal elections unless you specifically indicate the change is not for voter registration purposes.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. Title 52 Chapter 205 – National Voter Registration Close to an election, it’s worth confirming with your county Supervisor of Elections that the new address is reflected.
Auto insurance doesn’t update itself. Your premium depends in part on where the car is parked overnight, so moving between areas with different risk profiles can shift the rate. Notify your insurer promptly to avoid a coverage gap.
REAL ID and Your New Card
Federal REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025, and a REAL ID-compliant license or another approved ID is now required to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings.10Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID If your Florida license already shows a gold star in the upper right corner, an address change preserves that compliance. If you haven’t upgraded yet, requesting a replacement card with your new address is a reasonable time to do it, but you’ll need to visit an office in person with the full REAL ID document set: proof of identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of Florida residential address.
