What Counts as a Character
Your combination can include capital letters, numbers, a single space, or a single hyphen. On a seven-character plate, you also get one bonus space or hyphen beyond the seven, effectively giving you an eighth position for visual separation. Combinations the State Will Reject

Even after a plate has been manufactured and issued, the department can recall it during the registration period if it later determines the combination is obscene or otherwise objectionable. If that happens, you get a refund of the $10 use fee, the 50-cent special fee, and a prorated share of your license tax for the remaining months.3Florida Senate. Once you find an open combination, complete Form HSMV 83043, the Application for Personalized License Plate. Submit the application in person at your local county tax collector’s office or a licensed plate agency. What It Costs
The personalization itself costs $15 per year: a $10 annual use fee and a $5 processing fee deposited into the Highway Safety Operating Trust Fund.3Florida Senate. In the first year, add a $28 new-plate manufacturing fee, which makes the initial cost higher than the annual renewal.
If you pick a specialty background instead of the standard Sunshine State design, you also owe the specialty plate’s annual use fee. Those range from $15 to $25 depending on the plate, with most at $15, $20, or $25. Your local tax collector’s office may add a small service fee that varies by county.
Keeping the Combination at Renewal
A personalized plate renews annually with your vehicle registration, and the $15 personalization fee appears on your renewal notice each year. Skip that fee, and you lose the combination and get a standard-issue plate.
The statute gives you a one-year grace window. If you let a personalized combination lapse, no one else can claim it until a full year has passed since your last registration period.3Florida Senate.
