Ford F-150 Transmission Lawsuit: 10R80 Cases and Recalls

Ford Motor Company faces multiple pending class actions over the 10-speed 10R80 automatic transmission in the F-150 and several other vehicles, with owners alleging the trucks shift harshly, jerk, hesitate, and sometimes lose power without warning. As of early 2026, no settlement has been reached in any Ford F-150 transmission lawsuit, and the most important case, consolidated in the Northern District of Illinois, is waiting on a class certification ruling that will shape what recovery, if any, is available to owners.

What Owners Say Is Wrong With the Truck

The 10R80 is the 10-speed automatic Ford put into the F-150 starting with the 2017 model year and later added to the Expedition, Mustang, Ranger, and Lincoln Navigator. Complaints across those vehicles line up closely: harsh or erratic shifting, jerking and lunging between gears, hesitation on acceleration, and sudden unintended downshifts at highway speeds.1ClassAction.org. Class Action Filed Over Ford 10R80 Automatic Transmission Problems More severe reports describe complete loss of power, loud clunking, and full transmission failure.2Lemon Law Help. Ford 10-Speed Transmission Some owners have reported the transmission attempting to drop into first gear while traveling above 70 mph, causing sudden deceleration and temporary rear-wheel lockup.

Ford has attributed some of the shifting behavior to an “adaptive transmission shift strategy,” in which the vehicle’s computer relearns the transmission’s characteristics after a reset and produces “firmer than normal upshifts and downshifts for several days.”3FindLaw. Connor v. Ford Motor Company Plaintiffs say that explanation does not match the severity or the persistence of what owners experience.

Ford has issued technical service bulletins directing dealers to reprogram the powertrain control module, download a new transmission strategy, overhaul the main control valve body, and, in the worst cases, remove the transmission to replace internal clutch components. TSB 23-2123 identified the underlying cause as an “incompatibility of the adaptive calibration to adapt to hardware break-in over time.”4Ford Service Content. TSB 23-2123 – Harsh/Delayed Engagement and/or Harsh/Delayed Shift Many owners report that the fixes do not hold, and according to the Illinois complaint, Ford “refuses to replace or repair the Transmissions and merely states that the abrupt and harsh shifting is normal.”3FindLaw. The Main Case: O’Connor v. Ford in Illinois

The lead lawsuit is O’Connor v. Ford Motor Company, Case No. 1:19-cv-05045, filed in 2019 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and now assigned to Judge Jeffrey Cummings.5Wallace Miller. Ford Transmissions Other lawsuits, including Orndorff v. Ford from Pennsylvania and Marino v. Ford from Massachusetts, were folded into it.

The plaintiffs allege that the 10R80 has design or manufacturing defects and bring claims under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, along with breach of warranty, state consumer protection statutes, and fraudulent concealment.5Wallace Miller. Ford Transmissions In February 2026, Judge Cummings denied Ford’s motion for partial judgment on the pleadings and allowed plaintiff Michael Barcelona’s Massachusetts Chapter 93A consumer protection claim to move forward, finding that Barcelona had “sufficiently stated an independent claim.”6Ford Authority. Judge Allows Ford F-150 Transmission Class Action to Continue The judge also excluded one of Ford’s technical experts while leaving other experts on both sides in place.

A motion for class certification is fully briefed and pending.7Courthouse News Service. Ford F-150 Transmission Lawsuit Proceeds That ruling is the pivot point. If Judge Cummings certifies a class, the case could cover a large population of 10R80 owners and push Ford toward settlement. If certification is denied, owners would be left to individual claims or smaller group actions. A prior request to expand the class to other Ford models with 10-speed transmissions was denied in 2023.

Other U.S. Lawsuits

A separate consolidated case, McCabe v. Ford, proceeded in the District of Massachusetts before Chief Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV. In March 2024, Judge Saylor dismissed most of the plaintiffs’ claims and narrowed the case to state law, breach of warranty, and fraudulent concealment allegations.8Car Complaints. Ford 10R80 Transmission Problems In March 2025, the court compelled 18 named plaintiffs into arbitration and dismissed nearly all remaining claims of the other 27 plaintiffs, including all express warranty claims and certain state consumer protection claims. The court also denied leave to amend and permitted Ford to move to dismiss the few surviving fraudulent misrepresentation and Massachusetts consumer protection claims.9Kasowitz Benson Torres. Two other proposed class actions are also moving. Vangel v. Ford was filed in July 2023 in the Southern District of Florida.10AboutLawsuits.com. Ford, brought on behalf of certain F-150 drivers, alleges that the defect creates “an unreasonable risk of serious bodily harm and death” and has diminished vehicle values.11ClassAction.org. Canadian Class Action

Canadian owners have their own case. On April 2, 2025, Charney Lawyers PC filed a national class action in the British Columbia Supreme Court against Ford Motor Company and Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited (Court File No. VLC-S-S-252509).12Newswire. Regulator Investigations and Recalls

Ford has issued formal recalls that touch the 10R80. Recall 17S36 in 2017 covered roughly 15,000 F-150s for a shift-linkage pin that could detach.15NHTSA. Ford Recall 17S36 Recall 23V128000 addressed more than 47,000 2021 F-150s whose transmission software could falsely detect low fluid pressure and shift the truck into neutral; owners reported the software remedy did not fix it.2Lemon Law Help. Ford 10-Speed Transmission In 2025, NHTSA recall 25E070 targeted certain remanufactured 10R80 service replacements missing a bearing on the output shaft, which could prevent proper engagement in park.16NHTSA. A federal investigation is also underway. In March 2025, NHTSA opened Preliminary Evaluation PE25002, later upgraded to Engineering Analysis EA26001, into unexpected downshifts in F-150s.17NHTSA. NHTSA Engineering Analysis EA26001 One important boundary: that probe covers 2015–2017 F-150s using the older 6R80 six-speed transmission, not the 10R80, even though the symptoms overlap.18Car and Driver. What You Can Do Now

Because none of the class actions have settled or been certified, individual owners are not yet receiving payments through them. Some owners have gone a different route and pursued state lemon law claims. In one case handled by the Knight Law Group, owner Donovan Langford received a $165,000 settlement offer for his 2022 F-150, which he had bought for roughly $65,400. His truck started showing shifting problems about ten months after purchase, a July 2023 dealer visit turned up damaged seals and internal grinding, and the transmission failed completely in January 2024 while he was driving to Las Vegas. The truck sat in the shop for about two months before the claim resolved.20Knight Law Group. Ford F-150 10-Speed Transmission Lemon Law Settlement Offer

If your F-150 or other 10R80-equipped Ford has repeated shifting, jerking, or power-loss problems, keep every repair order and dealer diagnostic. Those documents matter for a lemon law claim now and, if the Illinois class is certified, for participation later. Watch the Northern District of Illinois docket for the class certification ruling in O’Connor v. Ford. That decision is the one that will decide whether most owners get a group remedy or have to fight the case on their own.
