The WBC super lightweight title was never at stake because Garcia had weighed in at 143.2 pounds, more than three pounds over the 140-pound limit, and the fight had already been downgraded to a non-title bout.5The Guardian. Why the Contamination Defense Did Not Reduce the Penalty
Garcia never admitted intentional use. His legal team blamed contaminated supplements, and independent testing by the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory did find trace ostarine, measured in picograms per gram, in two products he had listed on his VADA doping control forms: a NutraBio SuperCarb powder in raspberry-lemonade flavor and a Body Health amino-acid blend in strawberry flavor.8ABC News. Greene argued that because ostarine was not listed on either label and was undetectable without specialized analysis, Garcia could not have known it was there. He also submitted a clean hair sample and pointed to Garcia’s history of negative tests.9Yahoo Sports. How Haney’s Civil Lawsuit Was Resolved
On September 27, 2024, Haney sued Garcia in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, alleging battery, fraud, and breach of contract. The complaint said Haney had agreed to a bout conducted fairly and under the rules and would not have fought had he known Garcia was using a banned substance. It sought unspecified damages for physical injury, emotional distress, and reputational harm, and named Golden Boy Promotions and Garcia’s strength and conditioning coach Dave “Scooter” Honig as co-defendants.
