GBRS Group Lawsuit: Viral Backlash and Arbitration Ruling

The GBRS Group lawsuit ended in January 2025 when an arbitrator ordered former shipping manager James Humphrey to pay the Virginia Beach tactical training company more than $300,000 for defamation, after Humphrey admitted under oath that his viral social media allegations of racism against the company were false.1Yahoo Finance. How the Dispute Started

In November 2023, a package containing a BCM lower receiver — a federally registered AR-15 component — went missing from GBRS Group’s Virginia Beach facility. Humphrey, who processed hundreds of packages daily as shipping manager, was questioned. Security footage showed him leaving the building with a box and returning about six minutes later without it.2BIN News. Worker Says He Was Fired After Being Falsely Arrested for Stealing Package

The package stayed missing for 22 days. On December 4, 2023, a GBRS Group employee called Virginia Beach police. Officers arrested Humphrey at work on a charge of grand larceny of a firearm, a felony carrying up to 20 years in prison.3Atlanta Black Star. While officers were driving him to jail, the package turned up at GBRS Group. Humphrey said he had mistakenly dropped it at FedEx instead of UPS, and a courier eventually returned it. The company contacted the magistrate and the charge was dropped.2BIN News. Why It Went Viral

After the firing, Humphrey posted body camera footage of his arrest to TikTok under the handle @sp_sharkcityboy, along with a video framing what happened. The content drew more than five million views. He alleged the arrest and termination were racially motivated and directed those accusations at GBRS Group and its executives.3Atlanta Black Star. According to GBRS Group, the viral posts produced racially charged accusations and physical threats against company employees. Those consequences became the basis for the defamation claim the company later pursued.4Olean Times Herald. GBRS Group Awarded $300K From False Racism Allegations by Former Employee

The Arbitration Ruling

The dispute did not go to court. It was resolved through binding arbitration, and in January 2025 the panel ruled for GBRS Group, awarding the company more than $300,000 in damages for defamation.1Yahoo Finance. GBRS Group Awarded $300K From False Racism Allegations by Former Employee

The turning point in the proceedings came when Humphrey testified under oath. He admitted his racism allegations against GBRS Group and its executives were false, acknowledged that his posts had led to racially charged accusations and physical threats against employees, and expressed regret for that outcome.4Olean Times Herald. What Is Still Not Public

Because the matter was arbitrated rather than litigated, much of the record is sealed under confidentiality rules. The specific arbitration forum, the panel’s composition, and how the $300,000 award breaks down have not been made public. No appeals or additional proceedings have been reported since the January 2025 ruling.

Two points from the underlying facts remained in dispute in public commentary. Critics questioned why GBRS Group called police over what turned out to be a misdelivery to a different carrier, given that the charge was dropped within minutes of the arrest once the package resurfaced.2BIN News.
