Genevieve Sabourin: The Alec Baldwin Stalking Case

The Geneviève Sabourin and Alec Baldwin stalking case ended on November 14, 2013, when a Manhattan judge convicted the Canadian actress of two counts of stalking, harassment, attempted aggravated harassment, and violating an order of protection, and sentenced her to 210 days in jail. A separate 30-day contempt sentence, imposed during trial for repeated courtroom outbursts, ran consecutively. Sabourin said she and Baldwin had a romance; Baldwin said they had a single dinner about her acting career and nothing more.¹²

How They Met

Sabourin worked as a unit publicist on the 2002 film The Adventures of Pluto Nash, shot in Montreal. Baldwin had a small uncredited role, and the two met on set.³ They reconnected in 2010 after a mutual friend asked Baldwin to meet Sabourin for about an hour to give career advice.⁴

What that 2010 meeting was became the central dispute at trial. Baldwin testified it was a single dinner where he offered professional guidance, and he denied any romantic or sexual involvement, calling what followed a “nightmarish” pursuit.⁵ He conceded that some of his later messages “were more personal than professional,” including lines like “I’m sorry you’re suffering so” and “happiness is around the corner,” but said he wrote them to “pacify her” while hoping she would stop contacting him.⁴

Sabourin testified the evening was a romantic date that ended with a “sexual tryst,” and she said she fell in love with Baldwin “very fast.”⁶ Her attorney, Todd Spodek, told the court the two had maintained a “decade-long relationship” that turned “sexual in 2010.”³

The Conduct That Led to Arrest

Baldwin testified that Sabourin left as many as 30 voicemail messages in a single night, and he eventually disconnected his cellphone number.⁴ Prosecutors presented emails in which Sabourin signed off as “Genevieve Baldwin” and, on learning of Baldwin’s engagement to yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas, wrote: “Will you accept this simple proposal from my heart?”⁷

By early 2012 the messages had turned darker. One read “Call the FBI now!” Sabourin claimed to have the address of Baldwin’s Hamptons home and “easy access” to his Manhattan apartment building, and said she would insert herself into his workplaces and into the yoga classes taught by Thomas. Baldwin testified that a March 2012 message about infiltrating his building and his fiancée’s yoga class led him to conclude Sabourin was “dangerous.”⁸⁴

She also appeared in person. She showed up at Baldwin’s Hamptons home on March 31, 2012, and at a Lincoln Center event he hosted a few days later.⁹¹⁰

The Protective Order and a Second Arrest

A court issued an order of protection in May 2012 barring Sabourin from contacting Baldwin and his wife.¹¹¹²

The Trial

Sabourin’s trial opened November 7, 2013, before Judge Robert Mandelbaum in Manhattan Criminal Court. It was a bench trial, so the judge alone would decide the verdict.⁸

Baldwin testified he felt “terrorized,” comparing Sabourin’s conduct to something from a “Hitchcock movie.” He said she had appeared unannounced at his home on the day he proposed to Hilaria and later crashed the Lincoln Center event, causing him anxiety and terrifying his wife. As he spoke, Sabourin interrupted from the defense table, shouting “You’re lying!” and “You delete women after you have sex with them.”²⁸

Sabourin took the stand in her own defense. She acknowledged the many emails and the visits to Baldwin’s Long Island home, the Lincoln Center event, and his Manhattan apartment, but said she never intended to “harass or annoy” anyone and had been seeking to understand why he stopped contacting her. “I gave him my heart, my body, my soul,” she testified.⁶

Her defense argued she genuinely believed there had been a relationship and was seeking closure. Spodek called the communications “two-way” and personal, told the court Baldwin had “sold his client a fairy tale,” and accused Baldwin of using the court system to “sort out his relationships.”⁷¹²

Sabourin interrupted testimony from both Baldwin and Hilaria Baldwin and spoke over her own attorney during legal arguments. After warnings, Judge Mandelbaum held her in contempt and sentenced her to 30 days in jail.¹³

Verdict and Sentence

On November 14, 2013, Judge Mandelbaum found Sabourin guilty of two counts of stalking, one count of harassment, one count of attempted aggravated harassment, and violating the May 2012 order of protection through the Twitter messages to Hilaria Baldwin. He described her conduct as a “relentless and escalating campaign” to annoy and harass the Baldwins.¹

She received the maximum 210 days in jail for the stalking and harassment convictions, to run consecutively with the 30-day contempt sentence.² The judge also issued a five-year order of protection barring Sabourin from any contact with Alec and Hilaria Baldwin.⁸

Release and Aftermath

Sabourin served her sentence at Rikers Island and was released early on March 28, 2014. No public reason was given for the early release.¹⁴ In an interview shortly after, she said she had “lost my house, my savings, my retirement plan, my job, and my friends” and was “still seeking closure.”¹⁵

On May 23, 2026, Sabourin published a long statement on Instagram renewing her accusations against both Baldwins. She maintained her innocence and accused Hilaria Baldwin of committing perjury before the NYPD, the assistant district attorney, and the trial judge to secure her imprisonment. She said Hilaria Baldwin had targeted her because Sabourin held compromising information about Hilaria’s personal history and the nature of her marriage to Baldwin. She denied ever violating the order of protection after her release, saying Canadian police records could confirm she had remained in Canada and never re-entered the United States after leaving Rikers. She described the intervening years as “mass destruction” of her life and called Hilaria Baldwin’s actions a “judicial attempt at murder.” As of mid-2026, the Baldwins had not publicly responded.¹⁶
