Globe Life Lawsuit: Class Actions, Investigations, and Settlements

Globe Life Inc. is defending an active securities fraud class action in federal court in Texas, a proposed $4.66 million data breach settlement awaiting court approval, and an Arkansas class action over denied burial insurance claims that is scheduled for trial in 2027. Two federal investigations that grew out of the same 2024 allegations, one by the SEC and one by the Department of Justice, closed in July 2025 without enforcement action. The Globe Life lawsuit landscape, in short, is narrower than it was a year ago but still substantial.

What Set Off the Litigation

On April 11, 2024, short-seller Fuzzy Panda Research published a report accusing Globe Life’s most profitable subsidiary, American Income Life Insurance Company, of widespread fraud: writing policies for deceased and fictitious people, using fake bank accounts to fund premiums, and making unauthorized withdrawals from consumers’ accounts. The report also alleged an undisclosed executive kickback scheme.1S&P Global Market Intelligence. Globe Life Shares Plummet, Rebound Slightly After Short Report2InsuranceNewsNet. The stock fell $55.76 that day, closing at $49.17, a drop of more than 53%.3Glancy Prongay & Murray LLP. Globe Life Inc. The Securities Fraud Class Action

The largest piece of active litigation is City of Miami General Employees’ & Sanitation Employees’ Retirement Trust v. Globe Life Inc., Case No. 24-cv-00376, filed April 30, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The proposed class covers investors who bought Globe Life stock between May 8, 2019, and April 10, 2024.7Insurance Business Magazine. The complaint alleges two categories of false or misleading statements. First, that Globe Life attributed premium growth at AIL to “increased agent count and productivity” when growth was allegedly propped up by insurance fraud. Second, that the company said it complied with its Code of Business Conduct and Ethics while its subsidiaries allegedly tolerated sexual harassment and drug use.8Stanford Law School Securities Class Action Clearinghouse. Globe Life moved to dismiss. On September 29, 2025, Judge Amos L. The SEC and DOJ Investigations Closed Without Action

Two federal probes opened in the weeks after the Fuzzy Panda report. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania issued subpoenas seeking documents about the sales practices of certain independent AIL agents.1S&P Global Market Intelligence. Globe Life Shares Plummet, Rebound Slightly After Short Report The SEC’s Fort Worth Regional Office opened a preliminary inquiry in May 2024.

Both closed in July 2025 without enforcement action. On July 24, 2025, SEC staff notified Globe Life that they did not intend to recommend enforcement.11Yahoo Finance. The closures affect only the federal criminal and securities regulatory tracks. The private securities class action, brought under the same core allegations, is a separate matter and continues.

The Data Breach Class Action and Settlement

In June 2024, Globe Life discovered that an unknown threat actor had accessed databases belonging to a small number of independent agency owners at AIL and was attempting to extort the company. Globe Life did not pay the ransom. The breach ultimately affected about 855,000 customers and customer leads. Exposed data included names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, email addresses, phone numbers, health information, and insurance policy information. Credit card and banking data were not involved.13SecurityWeek. Insurance Company Globe Life Notifying 850,000 People of Data Breach

The resulting class actions were consolidated as In re American Income Life Insurance Co. and Globe Life Inc. Data Breach Litigation, Case No. 6:25-cv-00262, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. On February 12, 2026, the parties filed for preliminary approval of a settlement valued at up to $4.66 million.

Under the proposed terms, the 532,578 class members who received breach notification letters can claim:

  • Up to $5,000 in reimbursement for documented out-of-pocket losses tied to the breach
  • Up to $72 for lost time, calculated as four hours at $18 per hour
  • Two years of credit monitoring

Cash payments to class members are capped at $3.4 million, with $1.26 million allocated for attorneys’ fees.14ClassAction.org. The Arkansas Burial Policy Class Action

A separate consumer class action targets Globe Life’s handling of small “burial” life insurance policies, the kind sold to cover funeral and end-of-life expenses. Jennings v. Globe Life and Accident Insurance Company, Case No. 2:25-cv-00172-BSM, was filed September 3, 2025, in the Eastern District of Arkansas. Plaintiff Debra Jennings is the beneficiary of a $10,000 burial policy her mother held.

The complaint alleges Globe Life sells these policies, typically ranging from $5,000 to $20,000, through short telephone interviews with vague health questions and often without a signed written application. When a policyholder dies, the suit alleges, the company runs an exhaustive posthumous review of medical records and then rescinds the policy citing minor or unrelated conditions such as hypertension, neuropathy, or depression, even when those conditions had nothing to do with the death.16Top Class Actions. Class Action Lawsuit Claims Globe Life Used Outlawed Good Faith Defense To Deny Benefits

The suit invokes Arkansas Code § 23-79-107, which since 2011 has barred insurers from rescinding policies unless they can prove fraud or a material misrepresentation directly related to the cause of death. It brings breach of contract and bad faith claims for a proposed class of Arkansas residents whose claims were denied on these grounds since September 2020.17EIN Presswire. Judge Brian S. Miller denied Globe Life’s jurisdictional motion to dismiss on December 2, 2025. The company answered on December 16, 2025. Discovery runs through January 2027, with a jury trial set for the week of June 14, 2027.18PACER Monitor. Jennings v. Globe Life and Accident Insurance Company

The proposed class is limited to Arkansas residents. If you had a similar denial in another state, this case would not cover you, though the underlying allegation is not unique to Arkansas.

Earlier Regulatory Actions

The burial-policy allegations echo an older regulatory finding. In January 2019, the New York State Department of Financial Services issued a consent order against Globe Life Insurance Company of New York over the handling of “contestable” life insurance claims from 2006 to 2016. DFS found the company had improperly denied claims and rescinded policies for 439 deceased policyholders by unilaterally determining misrepresentation rather than proving it in court, as New York law requires. The order imposed a $439,000 fine and roughly $7.3 million in restitution, totaling about $7.8 million.19InsuranceNewsNet. Across all its subsidiaries, Globe Life has recorded nearly $22 million in penalties since 2000 across 29 regulatory actions, most classified as insurance or consumer-protection violations. Subsidiary Liberty National Life Insurance Company paid $9.35 million in 2006 in connection with a federal suit involving discriminatory practices. State insurance departments in Connecticut, Missouri, Virginia, Montana, and Maine have imposed smaller fines over the years.20Good Jobs First Violation Tracker. Globe Life Inc.

Where Things Stand

The federal investigations that drove much of the 2024 stock decline are over. What remains is private litigation. The securities class action in the Eastern District of Texas is heading into discovery after surviving a motion to dismiss. The Arkansas burial-policy case is in discovery with a June 2027 trial date. The data breach settlement is awaiting preliminary approval, and eligible class members will receive claim instructions if and when the court signs off.
