Google $630M Antitrust Settlement: Eligibility, Payouts, and Timeline

If you bought apps, subscriptions, or in-app items on the Google Play Store between August 16, 2016 and September 30, 2023, you are likely in line for a payment from the Google $700 million Play Store settlement. A federal judge granted final approval on April 30, 2026, clearing the way for automatic payments to more than 100 million U.S. consumers through PayPal or Venmo. Each eligible person is guaranteed at least $2, with larger amounts for people who spent more. You do not need to file a claim to receive the automatic payment.¹²

Of the $700 million, $630 million funds consumer payments and $70 million goes to the states that sued. Google paid the money in May 2024, and with investment growth the consumer pool sat at roughly $660 million by the time of final approval.¹

Who Qualifies for a Payment

You qualify if you meet all of the following:

You paid to download an app, made an in-app purchase, bought a subscription, or paid for an ad-free version of an app through the Google Play Store.
The purchase happened between August 16, 2016 and September 30, 2023.
At the time of the purchase, your Google payments profile listed a legal address in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Free apps and free downloads do not count. The payment is tied to money you actually spent on Google Play during the eligibility window. More than 106 million consumers received direct notice that they qualify.¹

How You Will Be Paid

Payments are automatic for most eligible consumers. Money will be sent through PayPal or Venmo using the email address or phone number linked to your Google Play account. When your payment is ready, you will get an email from PayPal or a text from Venmo telling you how to accept it.²

There is no claim form for the automatic payment. If your Google Play contact information is current and you have a PayPal or Venmo account tied to that email or phone number, the money will simply appear.

How Much You Should Expect

Every eligible consumer gets at least $2. Beyond that, payments scale with how much you spent on Google Play during the qualifying period compared with other consumers. The settlement documents do not publish a fixed average payout. The states estimated that after attorneys’ fees and expenses, the typical consumer would recover more than 47% of a reasonable measure of their damages.³

One piece of the math is still open. Consumer class counsel asked for $85 million in fees (about 13.5% of the fund) plus roughly $8.6 million in expenses, based on more than 98,200 hours of work. Judge James Donato approved the settlement itself but sharply criticized the fee request, calling the claimed hours “not reasonable” and the billing “grotesquely bloated,” and suggested he might appoint a special master to review the records. As of May 2026 the fee dispute was unresolved.¹³ A lower fee award would leave more money for consumers; a higher one would leave less.

What to Do If You Don’t Get a Payment

A supplemental claims process will open after the automatic payments finish. It is aimed at people who:

Don’t have or don’t want a PayPal or Venmo account.
No longer have access to the email address or phone number tied to their Google Play account.
Believe they should have received an automatic payment but didn’t.

Timeline and Current Status

The key dates for consumers:

November 20, 2025: Judge Donato granted preliminary approval and set the notice plan.
December 2, 2025 through January 20, 2026: Direct email notices went out to eligible consumers.
February 19, 2026: Deadline to opt out or file objections. Fewer than 500 consumers opted out and no objections were filed.
April 30, 2026: Final approval granted at the fairness hearing.

No appeal of the consumer settlement has been reported. The official settlement website has said automatic PayPal and Venmo payments will go out once approval is finalized but has not published a specific date. Watch your Google Play email address and the phone number on that account for a message from PayPal or Venmo.²

What the Case Was About

The settlement resolves State of Utah et al. v. Google LLC, filed in July 2021 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, and a parallel consumer class action, In re Google Play Consumer Antitrust Litigation, filed in August 2020. By the time the deal was reached, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands had joined the case.⁷⁸

The states and consumers accused Google of illegally monopolizing Android app distribution and in-app payment processing. The allegations included contracts that blocked rival app stores from being preloaded on Android phones, payments to major developers to discourage competing stores, technical barriers that made installing apps from outside sources difficult, and rules that prevented developers from offering lower prices through alternative billing systems. The legal claims cited the federal Sherman Antitrust Act along with state antitrust and consumer protection laws.⁹¹⁰

Google denies any wrongdoing. The settlement resolves the claims without an admission of liability.⁵
