The Group Health Plan litigation settlement is a $6 million class action resolution that received final approval on July 9, 2025, ending claims that HealthPartners (formally Group Health Plan, Inc.) allowed tracking pixels on healthpartners.com and virtuwell.com to send patients’ health-related activity to Meta and Google without consent. HealthPartners denied wrongdoing and settled to avoid trial.1Almeida Law Group. Final Approval Granted in Group Health Plan Litigation Data Privacy Settlement2GHP Pixel Settlement. Who Is Covered
The settlement class includes anyone who logged into healthpartners.com or virtuwell.com at any point between January 1, 2018, and November 10, 2023. If you used either site during that window, you are a class member.2GHP Pixel Settlement. GHP Pixel Settlement FAQs
A few groups are carved out: officers and directors of HealthPartners and its affiliates, the presiding judge, and judicial staff. HealthPartners employees who received notice from the settlement administrator are not excluded and can participate like any other class member.2GHP Pixel Settlement. GHP Pixel Settlement FAQs
What the Lawsuit Alleged
HealthPartners operates two consumer-facing sites where patients schedule appointments, look up physicians, research symptoms, and manage care. The complaint alleged the company embedded Meta’s Pixel Code and a Conversions Application Programming Interface (CAPI) on those sites, and that these tools relayed user activity to Meta Platforms in real time.3Justia. According to the plaintiffs, the transmitted data included how long users spent on specific pages, which buttons they clicked, and text typed into forms. More sensitive information was allegedly captured too: symptoms searched, medical conditions researched, medications and treatments explored, and appointment scheduling details. Each user’s unique Facebook ID was also reportedly sent, which would let the health data be tied to an individual’s Facebook profile.3Justia. The original complaint, Vreizen v. Group Health Plan, Inc., was filed February 28, 2023, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. Related actions were consolidated on March 29, 2023, under the caption In re Group Health Plan Litigation. Judge Jerry W. Blackwell allowed seven of the nine causes of action to proceed past a motion to dismiss in December 2023, including claims under the federal Wiretap Act, the Minnesota Health Records Act, and Minnesota’s Uniform Deceptive Trade Practices Act, along with common-law claims for invasion of privacy, breach of implied contract, unjust enrichment, and negligence.4CourtListener. What the Settlement Pays
HealthPartners agreed to fund a $6 million non-reversionary settlement, meaning any unclaimed money stays in the fund rather than returning to the company.2GHP Pixel Settlement. GHP Pixel Settlement FAQs
Before payments go out to class members, the fund is reduced by several deductions:
- Attorneys’ fees up to one-third of the fund (roughly $2 million), plus up to $50,000 in litigation expenses.
- Service awards of $2,500 for each class representative.
- Actual administration costs, handled by Atticus Administration LLC.
Whatever remains — the Net Settlement Fund — is divided pro rata among class members who filed a valid claim. In practical terms, individual payments depend on how many people submitted claims; no fixed per-person amount was promised.2GHP Pixel Settlement. GHP Pixel Settlement FAQs5GHP Pixel Settlement. Claim Deadline and Payment Status
The claim deadline was April 7, 2025. Class members had to submit a form online at GHPPixelSettlement.com or mail a paper form to Atticus Administration in St. Paul, Minnesota. The form asked for the claimant’s name, address, and preferred payment method: PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, a virtual prepaid card, or a check. If you didn’t file by that date, you are no longer eligible for a payment.5GHP Pixel Settlement. Short Form Notice
As of mid-2025, the settlement website said the final approval order was still awaiting receipt by the administrator, and no specific distribution date had been announced. The site stated it would be updated once Atticus Administration received the order and the settlement became “final and effective.” If you filed a claim, that website is where payment updates will appear.6GHP Pixel Settlement. Not To Be Confused With the Wisconsin Case
A separate lawsuit with a similar name, Pearson v. Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin, is unrelated. That case concerns a January 2024 cyberattack on a Wisconsin-based health cooperative that potentially exposed information for more than 533,000 people, and it produced its own proposed $3.5 million settlement in Dane County Circuit Court. If your notice or claim relates to a Wisconsin data breach rather than pixel tracking on HealthPartners’ websites, you are looking at a different case with a different claims process.9HIPAA Journal.
