Heather Bogle Case: Framed Suspects, Myers’ Plea, and Corruption

The Heather Bogle murder case is the 2015 killing of a 28-year-old Ohio single mother by her Whirlpool coworker Daniel Myers, a crime that stayed unsolved for more than two years because a Sandusky County sheriff’s detective framed three innocent people and hid the DNA evidence that pointed to the real killer. Myers pleaded guilty in 2019 and is serving life without parole. The detective, Sean O’Connell, went to prison for tampering with evidence.

What Happened to Heather Bogle

Bogle clocked out of an overnight shift at the Whirlpool plant in Clyde, Ohio, at 6:17 a.m. on April 9, 2015. GPS data later recovered from her Google account showed her phone arriving at a trailer on County Road 224 about thirteen minutes later. That trailer belonged to Daniel Myers, a coworker who had left the plant around the same time.¹

Her mother, Renae McLaughlin, reported her missing later that day after Bogle failed to pick up her daughter from school.² Bogle’s body was found around 8:00 p.m. on April 10 in the trunk of her own car at the Sommerton Apartments in Clyde. She had been shot twice, beaten, and handcuffed. Her hair had been chopped off, her fingernails cut down to the cuticles, and she was wearing an oversized Mickey Mouse T-shirt that was not hers.¹

Three Innocent People Framed

Detective Sean O’Connell, working under Sheriff Kyle Overmyer, ignored the leads pointing to Bogle’s coworkers and instead built a case against three people who had no connection to her: Keyona Bor, Omar Satchel, and Kayree Jeffrey.¹

O’Connell focused on Bor because she lived at the apartment complex where Bogle’s car was found. He pointed to a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt she owned and treated her Facebook posts about her child’s father getting a prison sentence as veiled confessions. He claimed, without physical evidence, that Satchel may have stolen a firearm used in the killing. He accused Jeffrey of dumping the murder weapon in a river; a dive team searched and found nothing.¹

DNA recovered from under Bogle’s fingernails was tested and did not match any of the three. O’Connell left that result out of the report he sent to the prosecutor.³ According to the sentencing judge, he also used two confidential informants to coerce a false taped confession from Bor.⁴ A Whirlpool employee emailed O’Connell saying she believed Daniel Myers was capable of the crime. He never followed up.¹

Bor lost everything. O’Connell raided her apartment repeatedly, showed up at the nursing home where she worked with guns drawn to serve a DNA warrant, and threatened that social workers would take her children. She was fired and evicted, became homeless, and at one point searched a dumpster for her children’s belongings.⁵ After she was publicly named a suspect, strangers called her a monster and told her she and her children deserved to die. She later said she was an easy target because she was “poor, black, and voiceless.”¹

Satchel was convicted of a separate weapons violation in March 2016 but was never charged in Bogle’s death; his defense counsel confirmed no evidence linked him to the homicide. Jeffrey cooperated voluntarily, gave DNA, and provided an alibi. He was never charged and was unequivocally cleared, though O’Connell kept publicly naming him as a suspect.⁶

How Daniel Myers Was Finally Identified

Sheriff Overmyer was indicted on 43 counts in 2016 on unrelated corruption charges and later sentenced to four years in prison. O’Connell resigned in September 2016.⁶ Chris Hilton, who campaigned on solving the Bogle murder, took office as sheriff and immediately asked the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to return the case.⁷

Hilton’s team treated everyone as a suspect until they could be ruled out and followed the electronic and forensic evidence. Google GPS data from Bogle’s own accounts placed her phone at Myers’ trailer at roughly 6:30 a.m. on April 9. Myers refused a voluntary DNA sample, so investigators got a warrant. His DNA matched the trace amount recovered from under Bogle’s cuticle.¹

A search of the trailer showed that floorboards had been replaced less than a week after the murder, which investigators believed was an attempt to eliminate blood or bullet evidence. Dental records showed Myers had a broken tooth repaired three months later.⁸ Investigators also found underwear in a safe, a journal documenting his sexual encounters, and photos and videos depicting him restraining women.⁹ Myers was arrested and charged in June 2017.¹⁰

Myers’ Guilty Plea and Life Sentence

On February 14, 2019, Myers pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, tampering with evidence, and specifications designating him a sexually violent predator and classifying the crime as sexually motivated. The plea took the death penalty off the table.¹⁰¹¹¹²

Bogle’s mother, Renae McLaughlin, told the court through a victim advocate, “At least we can go on with our broken lives knowing you’ll never be free.” She noted that Myers had attended Bogle’s funeral and donated $125 to a GoFundMe account for Bogle’s daughter.¹¹

Prosecutor Tim Braun disclosed that after Myers’ arrest, several women came forward alleging he had sexually abused them. They described a pattern of choking, biting, hair pulling, forced sex, and the use of handcuffs and cable ties. One woman said Myers had raped her, and his own daughter told investigators she had found recordings in his home showing him overpowering and binding women.⁹ No additional charges beyond the Bogle case were reported. Braun said many of those women repeated the same phrase: “But for the grace of God, I could have been Heather Bogle.”¹¹

What Happened to Detective O’Connell

After the Sandusky County Prosecutor’s Office asked the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to look into O’Connell’s conduct, he was indicted on three counts of tampering with evidence, one count of falsification, one count of coercion, one count of dereliction of duty, and one count of obstructing official business.¹³

He pleaded guilty to one felony count of tampering with evidence. At sentencing in September 2018, he said he had not intentionally omitted the DNA results but was “simply trying to give the prosecutor a feel” for his theory. Judge Patricia Cosgrove sentenced him to two years in state prison, saying the sentence was meant to send a message to other officers about presenting all evidence.¹ When O’Connell later sought early release, Cosgrove denied it, writing that he had shown no genuine remorse and that his actions caused “suffering and serious psychological harm to many individuals.”³ He was released on July 2, 2020, after credit for jail time served and program participation.¹⁴

The Sandusky County Corruption Backdrop

The Bogle case unfolded alongside a broader collapse of the sheriff’s office. While O’Connell was building a false case against Bor, Satchel, and Jeffrey, Sheriff Overmyer was stealing medication from drug take-back boxes to feed a prescription pill addiction, misusing public money for family vacations and his reelection campaign, and lying on ethics disclosure forms. He pleaded guilty to 13 counts and served four years.¹⁵ Both the sheriff and his lead detective on the county’s most prominent murder case ended up in prison for corruption. Local media named the twin scandals the top story of the decade for the region.⁴

The Leigh Ann Sluder Question

Myers’ arrest also prompted a second look at the 2009 death of his ex-girlfriend Leigh Ann Sluder, the mother of one of his children. She had been found in bed with a single gunshot wound to the chest from a .22 caliber rifle, and her death was originally ruled a suicide.¹⁶

Sheriff Hilton reopened the case in June 2017. Investigators found that blood flow and wound tracks were consistent with a self-inflicted wound, and a handwritten note recovered from one of Myers’ trailers was analyzed and determined to have likely been written by Sluder. DNA testing on the rifle was inconclusive because the weapon had not been properly secured during the original investigation.¹⁷ In March 2019, Hilton announced the case was closed and the ruling would stand. Sluder’s family maintained that Myers killed her, but investigators were unable to gather enough evidence to change the finding.¹⁶
