Hernandez Govan: Acquittal and Federal Cyberstalking Case

Hernandez Govan is a Memphis man who was acquitted in August 2025 of orchestrating the 2021 murder of rapper Young Dolph, and who was arrested less than a year later on state stalking charges and a federal cyberstalking charge involving an ex-girlfriend. He remains in federal custody as of mid-2026.¹

The Young Dolph Murder Charges

Young Dolph, whose legal name was Adolph Thornton Jr., was shot and killed on November 17, 2021, outside Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies in South Memphis. Two men got out of a white Mercedes-Benz and fired roughly 20 shots. He was 36.²

Govan, a resident of the Orange Mound neighborhood, was indicted in November 2022 on first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy said Govan had “solicited the murder” and “put the killing into motion.”³

Prosecutors did not accuse Govan of firing a weapon. Their theory was that Anthony “Big Jook” Mims, the brother of rapper Yo Gotti, placed a $100,000 bounty on Young Dolph, that Govan acted as the middleman, and that Justin Johnson and Cornelius Smith Jr. carried out the shooting. Govan was allegedly to receive $10,000 of the bounty.⁴ The attempted murder count concerned an earlier plan, allegedly called off, to target a Paper Route Empire turkey drive.⁵

Govan had a criminal history stretching back two decades that included drug, weapons, and assault charges. He grew up on Bradley Street, a few houses from the abandoned home where the white Mercedes was later found.³

The Trial and Acquittal

Govan’s trial opened on August 18, 2025, in Shelby County before Judge Jennifer Mitchell and ran four days.²

The state’s case rested largely on Cornelius Smith Jr., one of the admitted shooters. Smith testified that Govan hired him to “do the hits,” supplied the guns, and told him and Johnson that Young Dolph would be in Memphis around Thanksgiving. He said Govan later directed him to hide the Mercedes and arranged meetings with Big Jook about payment.² Smith’s girlfriend Angela Arnold testified that she saw Govan at a car wash hours after the murder, where Smith retrieved a phone he had left in the Mercedes.⁶ Prosecutors introduced cellphone records showing contact between Govan, the shooters, and Mims, and argued under Tennessee’s criminal responsibility doctrine that organizing the hit was enough for a murder conviction.

Govan’s lead attorney was Manny Arora, an Atlanta-based lawyer who appeared pro hac vice alongside local co-counsel Handell Durham.⁷ Arora went after Smith’s credibility, calling him a “pathological liar” who was testifying to lighten his own murder exposure. He pointed out that Smith had previously indicated Big Jook hired him directly, then changed his account at trial to name Govan. He also questioned why Smith would take a job from someone he suspected of cooperating with the FBI.⁴ Arora attacked the investigation as well, saying police had failed to pull surveillance footage from an AutoZone where Smith claimed to have met Govan, and arguing that some evidence tied to the Mercedes was fabricated.⁸ The defense told jurors nothing in the cellphone traffic directly tied Govan to a conspiracy.

On August 21, 2025, after roughly three hours of deliberation, the jury found Govan not guilty on every count.² The jury foreman, who stayed anonymous citing fear of retaliation, later said the panel believed Govan was “a player in the game” but found the state’s mastermind theory “a stretch.” “A trial is beyond reasonable doubt, right?” the foreman said. “And there were enough holes in it.”⁹

Reactions

DA Mulroy said his office “strongly disagreed” with the verdict but would respect it, adding that Young Dolph’s family was distraught but did not blame the trial team.¹⁰ Trisdaz Crawford, who identified himself as Young Dolph’s cousin, said he was “very upset.” Pamela Hill, co-owner of Makeda’s Cookies, said it was “hard for us to just relive this over and over again.”¹¹ Govan said he planned to leave Memphis and urged other Black and low-income residents to do the same.⁸

The Other People Charged in Young Dolph’s Killing

Govan was the only defendant to walk free. Justin Johnson was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, and in September 2024 was sentenced to life in prison plus 35 years. His appeal was denied.¹² Cornelius Smith Jr. pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on May 15, 2026, with the remaining charges dropped, and was sentenced to 20 years with no possibility of early release or parole.¹³

Anthony “Big Jook” Mims, the man prosecutors said ordered the hit, was shot and killed outside a Memphis restaurant on January 13, 2024, before Govan’s trial began. No suspects have been publicly identified.¹⁴ With Smith’s plea, the Shelby County DA’s office described the prosecution of all charged defendants as concluded.¹⁵

The 2026 Stalking and Cyberstalking Case

Govan’s freedom did not last a year. On June 11, 2026, the Memphis Police Department’s Fugitive Unit arrested him near Getwell Road and American Way on state misdemeanor charges of stalking and harassment.¹⁶

A Shelby County General Sessions Court affidavit described threatening calls and text messages Govan allegedly sent to an ex-girlfriend on June 3 and 4, 2026. The dispute started over $540 he had given her for a rental car; he initially told her to keep it and later demanded it back.¹⁷ Prosecutors said Govan threatened to have someone “shoot up” the woman’s home and to send explicit images of her to her family and post them online. After Memphis Police and National Guard personnel were posted at her home, Govan allegedly messaged her that “The National Guard can’t watch yo house all day” and called himself “bigger than the devil.”¹⁸

Govan posted a $4,000 bond on the state charges and was released on June 12. About twelve hours later, federal authorities arrested him on a separate cyberstalking charge tied to the same conduct, and the FBI filed a criminal complaint on June 13.¹ The federal charge carries up to five years in prison, well above the state misdemeanor exposure.¹⁹

Govan was arraigned on the federal charge on June 15, 2026, in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee before U.S. Magistrate Judge Charmiane Claxton, who ordered him held after finding he posed a danger to the victim.²⁰

His attorney in the new case, Claiborne Ferguson, called the federal timing “highly suspicious” given how soon it came after the murder acquittal. He said the government’s choice to file a criminal complaint rather than seek a grand jury indictment was “wildly unusual, especially on something that would be charged and is charged as a misdemeanor in state court,” and said he would move to dismiss and to challenge the detention order.¹⁸
