How Much Is Arkansas Sales Tax on Cars Bought Out of State?

If you buy a vehicle in another state and bring it home, the Arkansas sales tax on cars bought out of state is a 6.5% compensating use tax, paid to the Department of Finance and Administration when you title and register the vehicle.1Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Arkansas Compensating Use Tax Fact Sheet You have 60 days from the purchase date to do it, and missing that window adds a 10% penalty on top of the tax.2Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Vehicle Tag Renewal Several rules can cut what you actually pay: a lower rate for cheaper used cars, credit for tax you already paid to the other state, and credit for a trade-in or a private sale of your old vehicle.

How Much You’ll Owe

Arkansas doesn’t apply one flat rate to every vehicle. The state portion breaks into tiers based on the purchase price, and whether the car is new or used matters.

New Vehicles

Under $4,000, no state tax is due. At $4,000 or above, the full 6.5% applies.3Arkansas Code. Arkansas Code 26-53-126 – Motor Vehicle, Trailer, or Semitrailer Sales and Use Tax On a $30,000 new car, the state tax alone is $1,950.

Used Vehicles

Used vehicles get a friendlier middle tier. The same under-$4,000 exemption applies, and used vehicles priced from $4,000 to $9,999 are taxed at a reduced state rate of 2.875%.4Justia Law. Arkansas Code 26-52-324 – Special Tax Rate for Certain Motor Vehicle Sales At $10,000 and up, the full 6.5% rate applies.5Justia Law. Arkansas Code 26-52-510 – Sale of Motor Vehicles, Trailers, and Semitrailers A used car selling for $8,000 generates $230 in state tax at the reduced rate, compared to $520 at the full rate.

Local Taxes on Top

The 6.5% is only the state share. Arkansas cities and counties add their own sales and use taxes to vehicle purchases, and those rates vary by jurisdiction.1Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Credit for Tax You Already Paid Another State

If the out-of-state dealer collected sales tax at closing, Arkansas won’t necessarily charge you the full amount again. Under Arkansas Code 26-53-131, you get credit against your Arkansas use tax for tax already paid to the other state, provided that state extends the same courtesy to Arkansas residents.6Justia Law. Arkansas Code 26-53-131 – Credit for Tax Paid in Another State

How this actually works:

  • If the other state’s rate equals or exceeds 6.5% and it has a reciprocal agreement, you owe Arkansas nothing more.
  • If the other state’s rate is lower, you pay Arkansas the difference. Paid 4% there? Arkansas charges 2.5% to bring the total to 6.5%.
  • If the other state has no reciprocal credit for Arkansas buyers, you owe the full Arkansas tax with no offset, even though you already paid tax elsewhere.6Justia Law. Arkansas Code 26-53-131 – Credit for Tax Paid in Another State

You have to prove what you paid. Keep the dealer receipt or closing paperwork showing the tax line. Without it, the DFA charges the full 6.5% regardless of what the other state collected.

Trade-Ins and Private Sale Credits

When you trade a vehicle in at the dealer, Arkansas taxes only the net difference between the new vehicle’s price and the trade-in credit.3Arkansas Code. Arkansas Code 26-53-126 – Motor Vehicle, Trailer, or Semitrailer Sales and Use Tax Buy a $20,000 car and trade in one worth $8,000, and you pay tax on $12,000. This works the same whether the dealer is in Arkansas or another state.5Justia Law. Arkansas Code 26-52-510 – Sale of Motor Vehicles, Trailers, and Semitrailers

Sold your old car privately instead? You can still get a credit, but the timing is tight. The private sale must happen within 45 days before or after your purchase.7Code of Arkansas Rules. 26 CAR 30-702 – Sales Tax Credit for Private Sale of a Used Vehicle The credit equals the cash you received from that sale, applied against the new vehicle’s purchase price, and you pay tax only on the difference. Bring a bill of sale showing the private sale amount; without documentation, no credit gets applied.8Cornell Law Institute. 006.05.08 Ark. Code R. 12.1 – Sales Tax Credit for Private Sale of a Used Vehicle If you also traded in a vehicle on the same deal, the private sale credit is capped at whatever balance remains after the trade-in credit.

The 60-Day Deadline

Arkansas gives you 60 calendar days from the purchase date to title and register the vehicle, and the sales and use tax is collected during that registration rather than separately.2Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Vehicle Tag Renewal You pay the DFA directly at the counter.3Arkansas Code. Arkansas Code 26-53-126 – Motor Vehicle, Trailer, or Semitrailer Sales and Use Tax

Miss the window and the penalty is 10% of the tax owed, added automatically.3Arkansas Code. Arkansas Code 26-53-126 – Motor Vehicle, Trailer, or Semitrailer Sales and Use Tax On a $25,000 vehicle, the state tax is $1,625 and the late penalty adds $162.50. Until both are paid, the DFA will not issue your plate, and you can’t legally drive the car on Arkansas roads.

What to Bring to the Revenue Office

Gather everything before you go. Missing a single document means starting over on a different day. To title and register an out-of-state vehicle, Arkansas requires:9Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Do You Have What You Need?

  • The out-of-state title, signed by seller and buyer, with a lien release from the previous lender if a lien was recorded.
  • A bill of sale showing the VIN, date, purchase price, and signatures.
  • A current-year personal property assessment listing the vehicle, plus proof your personal property taxes are paid up to date.
  • Proof of insurance meeting Arkansas minimums on the specific VIN.
  • An odometer statement, required for most vehicles under 20 years old.
  • Your lien or loan contract if you’re financing.

The personal property tax requirement catches out-of-state buyers off guard. Arkansas ties vehicle registration to your county’s personal property assessment, so if the vehicle isn’t listed with your county assessor or you’re behind on property taxes, the DFA won’t process the registration.

Title and Registration Fees

On top of the sales tax, expect a $10 title fee and a weight-based registration fee:10Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. Motor Vehicle Registration Fee Schedule

  • 3,000 pounds or less: $17.00 registration plus a $2.50 validation decal.
  • 3,001 to 4,500 pounds: $25.00 registration plus a $2.50 validation decal.
  • 4,501 pounds and over: $30.00 registration plus a $2.50 validation decal.

Transferring an existing tag from your old vehicle to the new one costs $1.00 if you want to keep the plate number.

Private-Party Purchases Aren’t Exempt

Arkansas exempts most one-time private sales of personal property from sales tax under its isolated sale rule, but vehicles are specifically carved out.3Arkansas Code. Arkansas Code 26-53-126 – Motor Vehicle, Trailer, or Semitrailer Sales and Use Tax Whether you bought from a dealership or an individual in another state, the tax owed is the same.
