How to Reinstate Your Suspended Registration in Alabama

To reinstate a suspended vehicle registration in Alabama, take proof of current liability insurance and the reinstatement fee to your county license plate issuing official. The fee is $200 for a first suspension and $400 for a second or later suspension within two registration years.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-12 – Suspension of Registration Most suspensions come from Alabama’s online insurance verification system flagging a vehicle as uninsured, so the reinstatement is built around proving you now carry the required coverage.

Where to Go and What to Bring

You can reinstate through your county license plate issuing official, the circuit clerk of any county, or the Administrative Office of Courts. In practice, the county tag office is where almost everyone handles it.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-12 – Suspension of Registration

Bring two things:

  • Proof of current liability insurance meeting Alabama’s minimums of $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage. A commercial auto policy, motor vehicle liability bond, or cash deposit receipt with the State Treasurer also works.2Alabama Department of Revenue. Mandatory Liability Insurance3Alabama Legislature. • Payment for the reinstatement fee: $200 or $400.

The insurance document doesn’t have to be in the registered owner’s name. Alabama accepts proof under someone else’s name so long as the VIN on the insurance document matches the vehicle.4Alabama Administrative Code. When the Fee Is Waived

If your vehicle actually was insured on the date the verification system checked it, the fee is waived entirely and the suspension is terminated. This is the situation when the system made an error, or your insurer was slow to report your policy. Bring documentation showing coverage was in force on that specific date, and the official will reinstate the registration without collecting the fee.1Alabama Legislature. The Stored or Inoperable Vehicle Exemption

If the vehicle wasn’t being driven during the coverage lapse, there’s a way to skip the reinstatement fee. You have to meet all four of these conditions:

If you qualify, the current registration is revoked for the rest of the period and the fee goes away. You’ll then need to obtain a new registration and plate before driving the vehicle again, and you’ll need evidence the vehicle really wasn’t in use.6Cornell Law Institute. Don’t Drive Until It’s Reinstated

Driving on a suspended registration is a traffic violation, and the penalties compound. On a first stop, an officer will direct the vehicle off the roadway. On a second, it gets towed at your expense. On a third or later stop within two registration years, it’s impounded until you satisfy the insurance requirement and pay all towing, impoundment, and storage costs.7Alabama Legislature. What Happens After You Reinstate

Reinstatement isn’t the last step. After a first violation, the department forwards your information to the Director of Public Safety, and you’re required to purchase and maintain insurance for one year under Alabama’s financial responsibility statutes. After a second or later violation, that mandatory coverage period runs for two registration years.1Alabama Legislature. Alabama Code 32-7A-12 – Suspension of Registration During that time your insurer may be required to file proof of coverage directly with the state. If the policy lapses again while you’re in this window, expect another suspension and the higher fee tier.
