The Hunter Biden laptop photos are a set of nearly 10,000 personal images pulled from a MacBook Pro he allegedly left at a Delaware repair shop in April 2019. The pictures, which include nude and drug-use images alongside thousands of ordinary personal photos taken between 2008 and 2019, first surfaced in the New York Post in October 2020 and were later published in full by a nonprofit run by a former Trump White House aide. They have since driven a series of lawsuits by Hunter Biden, been introduced as evidence at his federal gun trial, and been swept up in the full pardon his father granted him in December 2024.
Where the Photos Came From
In April 2019, Hunter Biden dropped off a water-damaged MacBook Pro at a Wilmington, Delaware repair shop owned by John Paul Mac Isaac. He never came back for it. Mac Isaac has said the laptop became his property after 90 days under a signed intake form; Hunter Biden’s legal team later disputed that the form conveyed any rights to the data on the drive, and Hunter Biden has never confirmed the laptop was his.1Axios. Mac Isaac has said he reviewed the drives, found what he described as suspicious transactions and pornographic images, and alerted the FBI, which seized the laptop and a hard drive under a grand jury subpoena in early December 2019.2Senate Judiciary Committee. That copy reached Robert Costello, a lawyer for Rudy Giuliani, on August 29, 2020, and from there made its way to the New York Post.3New York Post. The Post’s first story, on October 14, 2020, focused on business emails, but the same reporting described sexually explicit images and a video appearing to show Biden using crack cocaine.4Time. Hunter Biden, Rudy Giuliani, Ukraine That was the public’s first look at material from the drive.
How the Full Photo Archive Reached the Public
The Post published only a handful of images. The much larger archive came from Garrett Ziegler, a former aide to Trump White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, whose nonprofit Marco Polo spent months reviewing and redacting the laptop’s contents. The group then posted nearly 10,000 photos on a dedicated site, BidenLaptopMedia.com, arranged chronologically from 2008 to 2019.5National Review. Fox Nation ran an October 2022 streaming miniseries titled “The Trial of Hunter Biden: A Mock Trial for the American People” that featured nude images and videos of him. The photos also appeared on Capitol Hill. At a July 2023 House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene displayed blown-up, sexually explicit images of Hunter Biden on poster boards, claiming they were evidence that he had improperly deducted payments for sex as business expenses. Other people in the images were blurred; Biden was not. His attorney Abbe Lowell filed an ethics complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics, saying Greene had “lowered herself, and by extension the entire House of Representatives, to a new level of abhorrent behavior.” Greene later used the images in a fundraising email.8Forbes. Are the Photos Authentic?
Authenticity was contested for years. When the Post first published, no other news organization could independently verify the material, and national security officials warned it could contain forgeries.4Time. Independent examinations followed. In 2022, Johns Hopkins University cryptologist Matt Green, working at the Washington Post’s request, verified 1,828 emails from the drive using their cryptographic signatures, confirming their contents had not been altered.10Washington Post. The clearest confirmation came from Hunter Biden’s own June 2024 federal gun trial in Wilmington. FBI Special Agent Erika Jensen authenticated the laptop on the stand, testifying that its serial number matched Apple records obtained by subpoena. Prosecutors introduced 18,000 pages of messages, photos, and videos extracted from the device and associated iCloud accounts.12NBC News. Hunter Biden’s Lawsuits Over the Photos and Data
Beginning in 2023, Hunter Biden filed a series of civil actions targeting people and outlets that had handled or distributed the laptop’s contents.
Against Rudy Giuliani and Robert Costello
In September 2023, Biden sued Giuliani, Costello, and affiliated entities in federal court, alleging violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and California state law. The complaint described the result as the “total annihilation” of his digital privacy and alleged the data had been “manipulated, altered and damaged” before and after reaching the defendants.14Courthouse News. Against Garrett Ziegler and Marco Polo
Also in September 2023, Biden sued Ziegler and ten unnamed defendants in the Central District of California, accusing them of “accessing, tampering with, manipulating, altering, copying and damaging computer data” that included tens of thousands of emails, thousands of photos, and dozens of videos drawn from his iPhone backup and cloud storage. Against Fox News
In June 2024, Biden sued Fox News under New York’s revenge porn statute, alleging the network’s streaming miniseries had published nude images and videos of him without consent. The complaint also alleged unjust enrichment and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Biden voluntarily dismissed the case on July 21, 2024, with sources indicating he intended to refile against different defendants.17PBS NewsHour. The Mac Isaac Case
Mac Isaac sued Biden, CNN, Politico, and the Biden campaign committee for defamation in 2022, pointing to a CBS interview in April 2021 in which Biden speculated the laptop might have been “stolen” or connected to “Russian intelligence.” Biden countersued in March 2023, alleging Mac Isaac invaded his privacy by distributing personal materials including nude photographs.
In August 2025, the Delaware Supreme Court unanimously affirmed dismissal of both sides’ claims. The court held that Biden’s interview statements did not name or reference Mac Isaac and would not lead a “reasonable listener” to infer they did. Biden’s invasion-of-privacy counterclaim was barred by the two-year statute of limitations, which the court said began running in October 2020, when the Post first published laptop materials. How the Photos Were Used at Hunter Biden’s Gun Trial
The laptop’s most consequential appearance was at Hunter Biden’s June 2024 federal trial in Wilmington. Prosecutors introduced the physical laptop as an exhibit and used its contents extensively to prove he was addicted to crack cocaine when he bought a Colt Cobra revolver on October 12, 2018, and falsely certified on a federal firearms form that he was not a drug user.19U.S. Department of Justice. The government presented a 75-page summary chart of messages and data pulled from the laptop and iCloud backups. The exhibits included text messages coordinating drug purchases, a video of Biden shirtless holding what an FBI agent identified as a crack pipe, and photographs of white powder on a scale. On June 11, 2024, the jury convicted him on all three felony counts. He faced a maximum of 25 years in prison. In a separate case, he pleaded guilty on September 5, 2024, to nine counts of federal tax offenses in Los Angeles.21New York Times. Hunter Biden Tax and Gun Case
The Pardon
On December 1, 2024, President Joe Biden signed a “full and unconditional pardon” of his son covering all federal offenses committed between January 1, 2014 and December 1, 2024. In a written statement, the president called the prosecution “selective and unfair,” said gun-form errors and tax disputes tied to addiction are rarely charged as felonies, and stated that “raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice.”23American Presidency Project. Hunter Biden The pardon contradicted his repeated prior assurances, including a June 2024 statement, that he would not pardon or commute his son’s sentence. The pardon ended his federal criminal exposure. It did not affect the private civil suits, which have proceeded, been settled, or been dismissed on their own tracks.
