Hunter Biden’s $15M Debt: Legal Fees, Alimony, and Life Abroad

Hunter Biden’s debt sits somewhere between $15 million and $17 million, almost all of it legal fees from years of federal prosecutions, a congressional impeachment inquiry, and civil litigation. The December 2024 presidential pardon from his father ended the criminal cases but did nothing about the bills already run up defending them. Since then a former law firm has sued him for unpaid fees, his daughter’s mother has moved to reopen a child-support case, and Biden himself has relocated abroad.

How Much He Owes

Biden has given two figures in two months. On the “Wide Awake Podcast” in November 2025 he said he was “$17 million in debt … as it relates to my legal fees.” On “The Shawn Ryan Show” a month later he put it at “$14, $15 million.”1New York Post. Even his lawyer can’t pin it down. In a mid-2026 court filing, defense attorney Barry Coburn acknowledged that “neither we nor our client know the ultimate amount owed,” and said Biden could not afford to hire a billing consultant or forensic accountant to review the invoices.1New York Post. Why the Fees Got So Big

Two federal prosecutions did most of the damage. A Delaware jury convicted Biden in June 2024 on three felony counts for lying on a federal firearms form when he bought a Colt Cobra revolver in October 2018 during a period he has acknowledged being addicted to crack cocaine.2CBS News. Kevin Morris and the $7 Million Backstop

Hollywood entertainment attorney Kevin Morris has been Biden’s primary financial backer since early 2020. In testimony before the House Oversight Committee in January 2024, Morris said he had loaned Biden at least $6.5 million. Combined with his purchases of Biden’s artwork, which exceeded $875,000, Morris’s total support surpassed $7.4 million.10CBS News. Hunter Biden Kevin Morris Loans

Alimony and Child Support on Top

Biden’s 2017 divorce from Kathleen Buhle required $37,000 per month plus 50% of any annual earnings over $875,000. He fell behind almost immediately. Buhle sued in 2019, a court found him in violation of the settlement in 2021, and by 2024 he owed her roughly $2.9 million in unpaid alimony, legal fees, and interest.14New York Post. A separate obligation runs to Lunden Roberts, whose daughter Navy was confirmed as Biden’s in a 2019 Arkansas paternity case. Biden agreed in 2020 to pay $20,000 per month, then sought a reduction in 2022, citing the federal investigations. A June 2023 settlement cut the monthly payment to $5,000 and required Biden to supply some of his paintings, with sale proceeds routed to an account for his daughter.15CNN. Why Income Isn’t Catching Up

Biden’s current earning power is thin. Since late 2023 he has sold a single painting, for $36,000. In the two years before that he sold 27 works at an average of nearly $55,000 each. Memoir sales have lagged, and the paid speaking engagements he anticipated have not materialized. In his defamation lawsuit against former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne, Biden claimed nearly $500,000 in “lost economic opportunities” — book sales, art sales, and speaking fees he says never came.12ABC News. Dropping His Own Cases

The money problems have pushed Biden out of his own civil fights. In March 2025, his attorneys moved to dismiss a 2023 lawsuit against former Trump White House aide Garrett Ziegler, which accused Ziegler of accessing and distributing data from Biden’s laptop. The filing said Biden lacked the “financial resources to continue litigating this case.”18Axios.
